Serenity for Google TV

Thanks: that sounds nice: what I'm really looking for though is a view similar to the current sliding window, only it shows as many titles as possible at the same time: eg. if I had 1000 films in my library and the view could show 50 titles at once, then I could see (by scrolling through this view) titles 1-50, 2-51, 3-52, ..., 950-959, 951-1000.  That would give me much better browsing because I'd see much more of the surrounding context (eg. alphabetical) and wouldn't have to concentrate so hard on spotting the desired title as it flashed by.  Any plans to do something like that? :)

I’ll add it to the possible future enhancements. The main issue can be with the tv screen. That you can shrink things down too much and make things harder to view and find what you are looking for. So have to experiment around and see what will work.

Thanks!  A nice approach would be to make the number of items (eg. the dimensions of the grid, or the length of the list, etc.) configurable in settings: it could have a reasonably small default, but owners of large plasma displays in small rooms could potentially increase it significantly.

BTW, don't forget you can navigate by First letter as well. Just select it from the Category options list, and then Select the Letter you want to filter the content by.  So if you roughly know where it is, you can do that, and then use the Skip Forward and Skip Back keys to navigate through the content quicker.

Thanks!  Added a request for a 3rd mode (list view).

Very nice app. I love that it can use an external video player so no need to waste power transcoding. Any thoughts on having the ability to use different views or different xbmc skins? Also any thoughts on being able to play the video on a dlna client, this would make a cracking way of browsing content to then play on a TV.

@Dratstab: I'm a little confused on your comment "to waste power transcoding". Does this relate to transcoding subtitles?

Some different views are planned for 1.2.0 to help those with larger video collections.

As of 1.1.0 serenity supports native play back of subtitles in srt format so transcoding isn’t necessary. Transcoding can be resource intensive for most file servers.

Dlna playback may be supported in the future as we use it to detect the ip address of the Plex server.

One of the problems I have with Serenity is that the horizontal movement on the screens is not fluid. So going from Movies to TV or whatever on the main screen seems like it is jumping. In addition I would like to turn off the magnification of the main headers, at least have an option for that. The Mediastream type skin is nice but it just seems more fluid in xbmc ( well there it is confluence I think). This lack of fluidness and magnified parts carries over to other screens. Things just don't look as good as they could.

I suspect these are really minor issues as the program itself is a really good Plex client. I really like the external player option. I do wish that Serenity and Plex for that matter would use the navigation buttons in the same way that Netflix does. The right button should move you forward faster and so on. Now they do nothing.

For the right button are you talking about the making the video player play back at x2, x4, or allowing you skip through the videos.   If the speed up option, there is no API available for the built in Android media player to allow the x2, x4 speed.  Netflix has it's own player they created.

As for the fluid movement of the video.  Right now I have turned off the animations on the Menu as I need to play with it a bit on the Google TV to make sure it doesn't slow down performance, so what you see right now is just it changing the background and displaying the text, so yeah not a very fluid motion but it is the quickest way right now on the Google TV to use the Gallery widget.  I'll be looking at some animations that can be applied to help give the smooth scholling behavior you see in the Google TV launcher.  Maybe I can take a look at it for 1.2.0.

It would be nice for the right and left buttons to do anything. Skipping through would be fine. I was thinking of the 2x, 4x, ... but if there is no API then that's that. The skip and fast forward on the Sony remote is just in an uncomfortable place at the bottom right of the trackpad. So are play and pause. It would just be nice to have the buttons do as much as possible.

When going from category to category I often have to press the right button twice. It's as though the first press is ignored. I've noticed that within Plex too but not other players.

If you are using version 1.1.x, some of the keys on the keyboard on the Sony remote will work as well.  See the apps FAQ for all the keyboard combinations supported.

Yes, I noticed that. I do prefer the remote side. There were a couple of minor issues I wanted to mention. The addition of  Recently Aired Shows  would be nice. That seem to be the default in Plex Pass. With Serenity you get Recently Aired Episodes. I see the logic of that but perhaps both could be there? Finally, of all the info I'd like to see it would be ratings such as the ones found in imdb. Right now I get all this technical stuff but that doesn't help decide whether or not to watch something.

Plex only provides me with catagories for Recently Aired which returns a list of episodes that were recently aired.   And Recently Added which again returns a list of Episodes recently added.   I am looking into allowing people to set a preference for which category to display by default.

Ratings is planned to be added, probably for 1.2.

With the Plex Pass app the Recently added seem to default to shows. You then click on those to get to the episodes. Anyway, a minor issue. A more important one is with Movies where Serenity has to fetch all the movies first before you can get to the categories. Not ideal for large libraries.

Am really liking Serenity. It's very stable and the external player option is great.

A preference for which category to display would be very nice.

Am I imagining things or has this thread been moved? I had to search to find it! It used to be under Google TV.

Philip

The Plex devs moved the thread. I’ve emailed them and asked for a forum for serenity.

…or you could rename Serenity as “Other”
