Hey guys.

Since Tone Mapping with HW just doesn’t run buffer-free under my Windows PMS (despite only 40%) load, I’ll probably have to switch to Linux.

Since I’ve never had anything to do with the OS before, I’d like to ask if there’s anything to consider here? Often the realisation comes too late. 🙂

Which Linux version is recommended? The server runs 24/7 exclusively for PMS. Installed are an i5 8400 (UHD 630 iGPU), 16 Gig RAM and 6 HDDs as well as an M2, two HDDs via PCIE-Card (ASM1061R-Chip).

The biggest problem: The 6 HDDs are in a Windows storage pool, but ReFS should already be usable via Linux.

Do you think the changeover is possible without any problems or can I expect other limitations?

I actually only want to enable 2-3 tone mapping transcodes. At first I thought a stronger CPU would solve the problem, but even at low load it leads to buffering, especially with WebOS devices.

Ubuntu Linux 20.04.3 LTS

You will have a learning curve in mastering Linux. It has improved greatly over the years but there is much you’ll need to do at the command line.

The change is completed. The problem also exists under Linux, I don’t believe it. Server load around 40%, but still every 10 sec buffering on tone mapping.

What the…?

Can you confirm the playback is using hw-acceleration for this stream?
You should see that when checking out the ongoing stream in the server dashboard’s `Now Playing` section.

Yes, HW is enabled (De- and Encoding).

I have now tested all available devices and the problem only occurs with active subtitles (SRT/PGS). Tone Mapping is running nice on all others without subs. The problem was probably not with the Windows server all along.

The server settles at 20% load, but the movies buffer every 10 sec. Direct 4k runs without problems.
