Shield Plex Player seems to be stuck in some sort of “read-only” mode

Server Version#: 1.24.4.5081
Player Version#: 8.24.1.28493

I can play videos, but cannot mark anything as “played”, it will not keep my place in a video if I exit, and it keeps reverting the audio track back to default

Like the title says, it is almost as if the shield app can only read my server in “read-only” mode. I don’t know how else to explain it. A typical example of this is, I choose my audio and subtitle track, I start watching the movie until half way, I exit back to the menu, and I have now lost my place in the movie, and the audio track has now reverted to audio track #1 with subtitles off. I also cannot designate anything as “played.” Nothing happens.

This started happening directly after a Plex app update on the shield.

EDIT: I tried testing things out on my Smart TV Plex App (ROKU) and it does NOT have this issue. that means this issue is only present on the android TV player app on my shield. Just to clarify also, my media server is NOT on the shield. It is on a PC.

I would really appreciate it if a developer or other user could help me out. This issue started literally the second after a recent Android plex player update. Additionally, other devices (such as a Roku TV) do NOT have ANY of these issues.

Hello, can a Plex employee please let me know if they have any ideas?

So I went nuclear, and completely removed my Plex server. I started from scratch and it STILL has these issues on Nvidia Shield. Can a Plex employee PLEASE offer some input? Can you please fix Plex player on Shield?

Can you share the server logs as well as the logs from your Shield’s Plex client app?

That sounds weird but no immediate idea what might be causing that behavior.
What version of the Shield software / Android TV do you have on this device?

Attached below.

Also, plex server version 1.24.5.5173 (Windows PC)

Player version 8.25.1.28703 (Android - nvidia shield 2019 pro, OS version 8.2.3)

I am not sure how to attach the logs from the Shield App unfortunately.

Removed Link

See " Android TV & Fire TV" section in the support article about Android / Android TV logs linked above

Unfortunately it won’t let me pull the logs. It just says Failure: 404 Not Found when I try to access the URL from that link. Any other ideas?

Have you previously enabled network logging in the app (step 2)?

Sorry, got it, here you go. Removed Link.

Do you see anything weird that could be causing the problem? I enabled the logging, and tried to mark a movie as “played” which didn’t work, as usual. So hopefully the logs will explain why.

According to the logs the underlying Android platform is refusing the connection to update the progress.
Do you have any fancy security apps or security configurations on that Shield that could prevent Plex from connecting to its backend and to report the progress to your server?

Are you referring to the fact that it is blocking analytics.plex.tv? I do have a pihole on a raspberry pi, which does block that domain, however I just tested things with the pihole disabled, and it unfortunately is still not working. The only other thing I can think of is that I disabled ipv6 on my network since I don’t use it, however I have had that disabled for ages, and this issue is recent. Do you have any other ideas? Thanks for your help with this. It is driving me nuts.

Also not sure if this is important, but I do NOT sign in with a plex account. I just use plex to stream over my local network, so I am not logged in with an account. Not sure if that’s important.

EDIT: I’m assuming it’s an issue on the Nvidia Shield side, and not on my Windows PC (the server) because it works fine on my Roku Smart TV, just not on the shield. I can’t think of any other security options that would be blocking it from connecting though. I even factory reset my shield and tried it, before applying my usual device tweaks/changes.

Okay so I have an update. I am now 100% convinced that it is an issue with the Android Plex App (or an issue with the shield).

If I turn on the ability to launch plex videos from the main Android TV UI, I am able to resume my progress… if I select a video that I was watching from inside the Plex app, it does NOT allow me to resume the video from where I was watching, and instead starts from the beginning (this was one of the issues I was having).

Therefore, I have absolutely no choice but to believe that it is 100% an issue with Plex on Android, or an issue with the Nvidia Shield itself (maybe a screwed up Android TV update?)

The weird thing is that I am not seeing anyone else with these issues, or at least I haven’t seen any posts about it.

Would be great if a Plex dev could give any suggestions?

Bump. Please Plex Devs…can SOMEONE respond? This issue is driving me insane and I have 100% narrowed down the issue to the Plex Player for Android.

We will take a look at this, it’s most likely something going wrong with saving an unknown user watched progress to an unclaimed server.

I’m assuming you don’t want to, but the issue should be solved by claiming the server and logging into the Android client with your account.

Thank you for taking a look. I really appreciate it. I had a feeling that it had something to do with not claiming the server, however it used to work just fine, and only recently started not working. Also, on my Roku TV, it works even though I don’t claim the server. I do prefer to not claim the server and just run it locally. It works for what I need it to do.

If you could tweak it to allow for non-claimed servers to get the benefit of saving watched status/audio preferences/etc, that would be fantastic. I basically bought the Shield just to use Plex.

Hello, I was hoping to follow up on this :-). Was the team able to figure out what was causing this issue when only using Plex locally without signing in?
