Agree with logic DaleFam, there has to be a cache or save local content API/call Devs could use to solve this.
Completely understand taking a DLNA client app as a base and building a skin over the top is where plex is at maturity wise on Xbone. A full blown client though will have to have some form of local cache/data repo.
Agreed... REALLY annoying. Our internet is good but its not perfect and does go out from time to time. Sucks that I can't play my local content when that happens just because they can't authorize the app.
Have to keep a roku stick around just because of this policy.
While I don't see the Xbox One and XBLive being terminated just NOW, it does concern me that if it ever happens years from now, my pseudo obsolete XB1 by then couldn't be used as a spare Plex access anymore.
As such, this matter will still be a problem in the long run if not addressed around now.
None of our servers should require plex.tv to work as they do in my humble opinion. The caveats with other devices should be squashed as quickly as possible as well, but again it's the plex teams focus that drives this, not ours. It's up to them really. Let's hope they sort something out. I don't even use these applications as I don't have any consoles but it still peeves me off that if I disconnected my internet certain things would stop working.
We're aware of this issue and looking into what we can do to fix it. As many of you mention, it's a strange (and frustrating) restriction when accessing content locally like we do with Plex.
Can anyone confirm if it actually uses the local network for playback? I don't believe it does which is why you can't watch it when Live is down. Seems kinda redundant and a waste of bandwidth for it to not pull locally.

Yes, it streams locally. With an upload speed restricted at < 1Mbps I can guarantee when I am watching 10Mbps+ content it is all local.
Me too. I’m signing into my xbox 360 temporarily until xbox live is back up. So annoying. Microsoft really needs to allow Plex to access the local network.

There’s DLNA of course.
But you don’t use Plex to get to use DLNA…
You should not worry about trivial issues.Your Xbox One will probably die before Xbox Live disappears off it. Think of the bigger picture. Power supplies / hard drives don’t last forever.
i hate to revive a dead post but i am a new user to Plex and considering it for me HTPC serving needs (i say new however i have known about/had a Plex account for some time, i stopped using it when i found that i have to connect to XBL to play my local content.) where i live i do not have access to broadband, its dial-up or tethering my phone. i of course have no way to share my internet to my intranet. this causes a big problem for me. any help/fix for this issue would be greatly appreciated and will most likely earn you a subscriber
I have children that I have screen time rules for video games, however I want to allow them to watch movies/TV when they aren’t logged in. Since this post started there are a bunch of media providers that now allow you to watch their content without a Microsoft login.
