I am using the plex app for PS3. When I play 480p videos it stretches the video (horizontally) making the black bars smaller. It doesn’t stretch it all the way to the edge, just enough to make the bars half the width. How can I make it play the original aspect ratio?
I compared it to the original file on my computer (connected to the same TV) and have verified that it is stretching it rather than cropping out the top and bottom. I can’t find any settings in the plex server or the PS3 app.
EDIT: I changed the title since I realized that not all 4:3 videos are being horizontally stretched.
I don’t think so. It is stretching the videos horizontally.
I did some comparing and found that it doesn’t do it with every video. Here are some example pictures. I couldn’t do a screenshot on my ps3, so I just took pictures.
On this file (deep space nine) you can see in the pictures that it stretches the image a little. I also included the media info which has all of the audio and video information for the file in question. PC using MPC-HC PS3 using Plex Media Info
On this file (its always sunny in philadelphia) it does not stretch the image. Here are the pictures and media info. PC using MPC-HC PS3 using Plex Media Info
I noticed that the deep space nine file had a weird aspect ratio on the media info. So, I tested it out with a different season which has a 4:3 aspect ratio. Still the same stretching.
I think the reason it’s working for you in the Always Sunny In video is that the video is being transcoded due to the High@L5.1 profile. The other videos’ profiles are low enough that the video stream will be copied as is and streamed to the device (Direct Stream).
If you disable Direct Stream in the Settings \ Video does the stretching stop?
