I have PMS running on windows 10 on my local network. When I use the web player on the same PC (or on a different PC on same network), I get a local connection as I would expect. However, when I use a local Roku or android app on the same network, I get the indirect connection. I would expect and like these to be local connections. From outside my network, I get remote access and that is working fine and listed as remote. I have port 32400 forwarded and PMS set to that port manually.
I am using comcastās provided router/wifi.
As best as I can tell all the local wifi connected players are getting the indirect connection and the hardwired (ethernet) are showing as local.
Comcast (my ISP) has the DNS entries locked down on the router so I canāt change them. However, I set one of my wireless clients as static and used the google DNS servers. I still have the issue.
Note that it does work correctly for some clients on the local network (and those are getting their settings from the comcast router for DNS). So Iām not sure what to try next.
Do you have perhaps more than one ārouterā-type device in your home network? Maybe you added additional routers to improve wireless coverage?
Or some connection inbetween is done with PowerLAN adaptors?
Good thought, but I only have the one device provided by comcast (modem/router/wifi) in use. We get good enough wifi coverage with their default device.
Its as if the rokus and phone (all on wifi) arenāt seen as local and try to connect remotely, but canāt. So they go through the relay. Those connected by ethernet (3 differrent computers) are all seen as locally correctly.
Is your WiFi perhaps in āguest networkā mode or is there a feature enabled which is often called āclient isolationā or āAP isolationā? (or similar)
Iām familiar with both those concepts. However, there are no settings (or displays) for those options in my comcast router. It is rather limited in its configurability. I think Iām fortunate that it has port forwarding. lol.
Maybe, you should go for a wireless āaccess pointā device and use this for your wireless clients, instead of the main routerās WiFi?
Since the access point is attached per wire, it should put your wireless devices into the same subnet with your server and the other wired clients.
Yeah, I think that should work. I was trying to stay away from having to add additional hardware to my network (just to keep things simpler). If I canāt think of another way or another suggestion doesnāt come along in a day or two, I may give that a try. Thanks.
Iāve lost count of the number of potential solutions/tweaks I tried in order to resolve this issue, both to the Plex interface and to my computerās network settings. (Even when my computer would finally establish an indirect connection it always took ages to do so.)
In the end I uninstalled version 18.x (I think Iād updated to all variations as and when they were released) and reinstalled version 17.0.x which, luckily, I hadnāt deleted. It resulted in an instant ācureā.
I guess Iāll try the occasional new version, as and when they become available, in the hope that this apparent glitch is finally resolved, reverting back to version 17.0.x, again, if need be.
Please let me know which (if either) works. Although with the first link, my computer appears to gradually upload the associated zip file, I find that clicking it does nothing (and itās preceded by the word āUploadingā so is, presumably, a dud), and the second option is a link to a shared file Iāve just created on my Google Drive (which Iām pretty certain will work). Good luck!
One more thing, in āGeneralā under āSettingsā, from the options āServer version updatesā I set this to āAsk meā rather than āAutomatically during server maintenanceā because the damned thing automatically upgraded it to one of the 18.x versions, again, meaning I had to repeat the entire uninstall/reinstall process to reinstate version 17.0.x.
The first link did not download. I was able to download from the 2nd link. Thanks.
Unfortunately Iāve installed the version you provided, restarted everything and still am getting the indirect connection from wireless devices on my network.
I wonder if the logs would provide any useful information regarding this issue.
Oh, sugar (admittedly not the first āSā word that came to mind)!
Iāve no idea what you could try, next: it appears youāve tried all of the obvious things and itās proving to be real needle in a haystack stuff. It seems to be a pretty widespread issue so we can only hope itās a genuine Plex-based issue that theyāll resolve before too long.
Hereās the workaround Iām using to solve the issue:
Iām using the latest version of PMS on Win 10.
Comcast modem/router is fully functional providing tv, phone, wired and wireless internet. I took an old router and configured it as an Access Point and connected it to a wired port of the Comcast modem/router. Now when I connect to the SSID of the Access Point I get a direct connection to PMS. Note that I could not use the Comcast modem/router in bridge mode. That disabled too much functionality that I still needed from the device. Also, I didnāt use my old device as a router because I wanted to avoid a double NAT situation. So I used it to only provide wireless.
The root issue seems to be the way the Comcast modem/router separates or isolates the wireless traffic from the wired traffic even though its on the same subnet. And there is no advanced configuration available to allow me to change that behavior.
Thanks everyone for the help and tips. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
