sonic analysis should probably happen after any other adding/matching stuff happens
Wow that’s fast… I am at about 1.5 minutes per album on a 10700k.
Well I started with 2201 albums and I’m at 2149 with 72hrs ish going this is going to take forever
Thanks for the reply but :
1, yes I know my plex account can have multiple servers, BUT I WANT TO BE just a bit GREEN! … I don’t want my windows pc running full time (it uses ~40 wats when idle and well over 300++ when busy) compared to the Pi that uses <~5 wats idle and ~12 wats maxed out (including the 8TB HDD (USB)). Okay I’m not including any monitors (both cases).
2, why should the different paths of the OS pose a problem there are many examples of different platforms accessing data from different OS’s …
… including PLEX! Ie. I can play any video/audio from any plex server on any plex player regardless of the underlying platform.
3, This data should be in a separate DB… …make it shareable…
the path problem is not so much a problem for playback etc, but the paths are stored in the database.
and changing the paths in the database is not exactly simple or user friendly.
Watching the progress is going to drive me crazy. The speed is quite irregular. After 24 hours it now looks like I am doing 1,000 albums per day.
But, I’m starting to think it might be stuck now. I added some files while Sonic Analysis was going. PMS noticed and Scanned the files… but the scan process got stuck … it was frozen on one album for a long long time.
So, I gracefully rebooted the server. When it came back up it finished scanning the new music and resumed Sonic Analysis… but Sonic Analysis is not spinning up child processes like it did before, and CPU usage is about 10% instead of about 80% when it was cooking before.
I see a Plex Transcode process running now, though nothing is playing… perhaps that has to do with making thumbnails or some other routine task. I never bothered to look at processes until Sonic Analysis started so I don’t know what’s normal.
Well, it’s done when it’s done.
The generated data are basically tables with numbers in them.
i.e. a negligible amount of data, compared to cover art and preview thumbnails. I think it is even less data volume than the results of the loudness analysis.
It might produce a few temporary files during analysis, but only for the albums which are currently being analysed.
Unless you are very low on free hard drive space and have albums with thousands of tracks in them (neither of which is advisable anyway), I don’t foresee any hard drive shortage caused by the sonic analysis.
I’m seeing the same behaviour. Last night I kept seeing the same amount of albums that needed to be processed for hours.
This morning, after rebooting my pc, it progressed a bit (about 40 albums), but then seemed to be stuck again (only 19,000 albums to go now…)
I guess I’ll just ignore this option for now. Who knows, maybe in a couple of weeks I’ll see some results pop up.
Hey guys,
I’ve tried to get the Sonic Analysis to go through my library, but there doesn’t seem to be any progress. I don’t think it’s done anything. I’ve got just over 1700 albums / singles etc, but there’s no indicator as to what is done. Am I missing something?
Enable server “debug” logging
(do NOT enable “verbose” logging)
Restart your server
Make sure sonic analysis is enabled in both
- the properties of your music library
- under “Library” in the server settings
Wait until the server maintenance windows has passed at least one time.
Then look in the Plex Media Server[n].log
search for lines containing sonic
Thanks for this, but I’m not sure how to do the first 2 points or what you mean by " Wait until the server maintenance windows has passed at least one time.
Then look in the `Plex Media Server[n].log?"
I did restart my server though and check that Sonic Analysis was enabled, which is was.
Enable server logs under Settings - Server - General - “Show Advanced”
The maintenance time window is defined under Settings - Server - Scheduled Tasks
I too can not tell if this is working or not, I can’t find anything in my logs showing sonic but I don’t know if I’m looking in the right place. I followed these instructions
If it ran overnight (as a scheduled task) how do we know it worked?
If you find lines in the log which are mentioning sonic analysis. If you don’t, it didn’t work.
It is important to only enable “debug” logging, but NOT “verbose” logging. Otherwise, the relevant lines are very likely long flushed out by a tide of overly detailed lines dealing with other server functions.
Which logs should I be looking at? Plex Media Server Logs_2021-08-16_07-59-47.zip (8.9 MB)
As mentioned above, look in the Plex Media Server[n].log files
I’ve found this in your logs, but it was nearly flushed out by reports about other activities (you might wanna disable library updates during maintenance for a while):
Aug 16, 2021 01:04:23.906 [8304] DEBUG - [Butler] Activity: registered new activity b7a2cb56-0a40-4a3b-a13b-649f677c6bd9 - "Sonic Analysis"

i.e. you are on a good path there.
208 of 1671 albums already done.
Do you mean by “disable library updates during maintenance for a while” uncheck the Scan my library periodically box under Setting > General > Library ?
This, but also “Update all libraries during maintenance” under Scheduled Tasks.
Last night I left the system seeming to be stuck on Sonic Analysis… decided to let it go and see what happened.
This morning my Windows server was unresponsive. The box was up and healthy but clients could not connect to the Plex server.
I rebooted, and then fiddled with maintenance window times to make sure things got started. Sonic Analysis started again per the client activity report, but I think it may be borked… CPU usage is low and I don’t see child processes. (I do see a couple of Transcode processes.)
Ah, a few minutes later, I have 7 PMS child processes… After a few minutes, they went away, and my album count is still stuck where it was before.
(Yesterday after a server reboot I got SA into a weird state where the client activity monitor showed TWO SA entries, each with a different album count.)
After turning on debug logs and checking for sonic I can now see that indeed, nothing is happening.
When reviewing the full log I see some kind of login check every minute but no other activity.
FYI you can watch your Plex logs spit out relevant lines with this Windows PowerShell command.
Get-Content "C:\path\to\Plex Media Server.log" -Tail 10 -Wait | Select-String "sonic"
Edit to add: Sonic Analysis is definitely not moving ahead, it’s been stuck on the same count for hours and CPU usage is low.
