Sonic Analysis - has processed 6 albums in 40 minutes

I too am stuck with slow processing. Looking over several threads in the forums it seems Intel processors are much faster than AMD processors. Anyone else with AMD running slow?

I have a dedicated AMD Athlon X4 740 as a host.

Not sure that’s simply based on the chipmaker… keep in mind your CPU is close to 10 years old. While it used to be a brilliant CPU back in the day and it might still be performing strong, it’s ancient technology when it comes to CPU performance (no disrespect to AMD or your setup).

Is it typical for my server to be stuck on “Rebuilding artist index” for hours after adding new albums (like after the actual library scan has finished and the albums are available for playback on the server). It seems a good part of the sonic analysis features are disabled during this process (similar artists are shown but similar songs or albums do not display). For reference, my Plex server is running off a 3950X so CPU power isn’t really an issue.

I seem to be averaging about 20 an hour. 4800 albums will take a bit at this rate. I set my scheduled maintenance to run 11pm-8am, but the sonic is still running at 13:45 so I guess this will just run forever until it doesn’t?

I have it set as low priority which may be why it’s running slower.

I’d start with albums which have an insane amount of tracks.
That being said, I have an album with 1041 tracks (it’s a box set) which was analysed just fine. But then my server has plenty of free space to work.

Keep in mind that all tracks of an albums are being converted to uncompressed WAV for the analysis.
If you are running out of hard drive space on your server, this can make the analysis seemingly stuck.

That would only affect the drive that the metadata/temp files are located in right?

Curious to what kind of footprint this is going to bring? I have 5TBs free as far as space for it run the sonic for temporary conversion so I doubt that should be an issue.

To unstick Sonic Analysis, I tried this:

  • Edit library settings, disable SA
  • Restart Plex server
  • Edit library settings, enable SA

After doing this SA did appear in the client activity monitor, along with the log lines below. The log lines did not appear on a previous server restart without toggling SA enable–so, I got farther.

Aug 16, 2021 15:40:07.163 [16544] DEBUG - Activity: registered new activity c312f6b1-6ee9-49ea-b749-5eb4ce25407c -

0.0% - Sonic Analysis
Aug 16, 2021 15:41:14.791 [13852] DEBUG - Butler: Performed sonic analysis on 0 batches of albums.

However, the activity monitor album count is still frozen and the log shows no other sign of SA underway.

This is a test server so I’ll probably delete the library and start over, making sure that all other scans and analyses are done before I turn SA loose again.

Since I was looking at Windows processes I also noticed some heavy use of the Windows antimalware service executable while PMS was chugging along. I tried adding Plex process names to the Windows Defender exclusion list. This did seem to spin down the antimalware process. It will be interesting to see if this makes for a faster scan (or anything else).

I may be wrong, but this sounds like Windows Defender scanning the temporary WAV files that the Plex transcoder generates for each track during analysis. It shouldn’t have too much of an effect on performance, unless the drive you’re using for Plex’s temp storage is particularly slow (like a 2.5" laptop hard drive, for example). On the other hand, SSD storage should be next to unnoticeable.

That seems like a pretty good guess.

Well… all good things to those who wait.

Hey @OttoKerner
I checked over my log this morning but can’t see that much. Would you mind looking at mine and letting me know if you can spot anything?

The only thing I can see is that you have updated to DSM7, which might (or might not) be important.
I don’t know much about the intricacies of Synology, but I noticed a lot of hassle with the switch to DSM 7. DSM 7 - Packaging 2.0 - Forum Preview

Ah ok, I followed a video on how to install DSM7 and it worked without any real issues. So I can’t complain, but I guess what you’re saying is as this is a newish thing it might not work until a new update?

It might.

My synology was updated to DSM 7 a few weeks ago following the guidance here. It’s now happily chugging away at analysing my music files.

This appears to be a common mistake:
forgetting to activate sonic analysis in both places.

  1. Settings - Server - Library - “Analyze audio tracks for sonic features”
  2. properties of the library, “Advanced” tab, “Sonic Analysis”

And only some x86-compatible installations.

Does it work with Tidal integration or it is just for Local albums ?

My server has processed several hundred albums, now stuck at 3540 remaining. Logs attached. Running latest public release of PMS. I tried restarting the server.

Only local.
And perhaps on other Plex servers which may be shared with your account.
