Sonos Arc soundbar DTS to AC3 Transcoding not working

Strange as on my LG C9 it’s simply enable passthrough on Tv and disable DTS on shield and Plex plays Multichannel PCM!

No worries. Im gonna keep messing with settings and Ill report back if I can get it to work.

What is the exact model of your TV?

My TV is a TCL 55R617. Ive messed with a ton of settings and still get PCM 2.0 on Plex on the Shield. Native Roku app works fine on the TV and all other apps are fine as well.

Is that model able to do eARC, it didn’t come up when I did a quick search only 55R625 was the closest to your model.

Reference here

Your TV don’t support eARC which you’ll need for multichannel PCM.

I’m in the same boat when my LG C8. We’re stuck waiting until we can get Plex to transcode DTS.

Got it. Ill stop messing with it then and hope for the DTS patch soon. Thanks everyone for their help and insight so far.

Good point, you can always use the workaround listed in the thread (Kodi+Plex Connect) but appreciate it means jumping from apps when wanting to play DTS

FWIW,
A small tip to other in the same situation. I realize this is not for everyone.

I’ve got an nvidia shield tv pro (2019) + sonos arc system + 2015 Sony Bravia (with only ARC, no eARC).

I like the panel in my old TV which give me great picture in 4K and HDR10 so I didn’t feel it was worth it to buy a new TV just to get an eARC-port.
I’ve decided to buy a https://hdfury.com/product/4k-arcana-18gbps/ for my setup.

Yes, it’s some extra money, but now I’ve got not only fully working multichannel sound with Plex (the nvidia shield does the decoding of DTS and DTS-HD to Multichannel LPCM) but also Dolby Atmos.

I’m really happy with my setup now, and everything works as expected.

Interesting workaround! That’s a cool device, though $200 is really steep to workaround a silly software issue. If I had lip sync issues as well it’d be a compelling option.

I do have one of the HDFury Arcana devices for another project. I did set it up with my Sonos syst m but it seemed more cumbersome than I wanted since I have multiple switches/devices and sources. I wished it just went straight to the ARC and didnt need to be attached to a source. Id be willing to sell the device for a discount if anyone wants to give it a go. I have enough workarounds at this point that I will just wait for a DTS patch from Plex.

Still having some issues here

Shield 2017 -> LG C9 -> Sonos Arc

Disabling passthrough on Plex means DTS videos are coming through as multichannel PCM on the Arc (Great!) but so does TrueHD, which isn’t something I want converted as it drops 7.1 to 5.1 and also loses Atmos

If, instead, I change to HDMI passthrough in the app, I lose DTS audio (obviously) since the Arc can’t deal with that.

If I change the settings in Shield from automatic sound formats to manual, then disable DTS and DTS-HD (but leave TrueHD, Atmos, and all other Dolby formats) I still lose TrueHD in Plex

I know this isn’t super helpful but your apparent config in your last sentence is how I have my shield configured and it’s working for me (true hd bit streamed and DTS streamed as LPCM)

Ah, damn. Any idea what settings your TV has going for it?

The stream info on Plex as I’m playing back says my receiver doesn’t support TrueHD, so I’m not sure where the disconnect is

George, would you mind sharing your settings, I thought all was well but it appears I have the same Issue in that I have lost TrueHD since the LPCM update and disabling DTS on the shield.
1 step forward in terms of now being able to play DTS movies and get multichannel PCM but a major step back in loosing Atmos on all my TueHD 7.1 movies :frowning:

Similar setup
LG C9 OLED - Shield Pro 2019 - Arc

Are you definitely getting Atmos since disabling the DTS and DTSHD settings on the Shield?

Hmm so I noticed that I only get stereo PCM from Plex now, even if I configure it for optical output and tell it only AC3 is supported. The server shows that’s it’s transcoding the audio, but I still only get stereo PCM. Direct playing Dolby content is fine; it’s only DTS content that does this. Plex in Kodi is fine too.

So I just tested this with your exact setup and am experiencing the same problem as @jesalr above:

If I disable DTS and DTS-HD on the Shield I get multichannel pcm 5.1 with DTS movies, but I dont get Atmos.

If I set it to Auto I get Atmos but DTS doesnt work.

I’m positive this was working a week ago…

Edit: Think it started when i updated the shield (and thus restarted it) earlier today. I just tested setting the codec-setting to auto -> restarting the shield -> setting dts and dts-hd to disabled and now both dts and atmos is working again…

I am in the same boat as everyone else here. Right after the Sonos LPCM update, everything worked! Now I cannot get any Dolby lossless audio track to come through.

Setup
Sony Bravia A8H
Sonos Arc (connected to A8H via eARC)
Nvidia Shield Pro (2019)

Sonos says Multichannel PCM 5.1 for Dolby TrueHD/Atmos tracks. I have tried switching the format support back to Auto on the Shield, and Dolby TrueHD still comes through as Multichannel PCM 5.1. Plex says the audio transcode reason is “TrueHD audio is not supported by this device.”

Plex client version: 8.9.2.21619 (613cb8fd)
Android TV SW: 8.2.1 (32.8.435.31)

Anyone have any ideas for a fix? Are we just waiting for Plex and/or Android TV to update?

Ok. After multiple attempts at various settings combinations, I think I finally got everything to work properly including DTS to Dolby 5.1 using regular Plex app on Nvidia Shield -> LG C9 -> sonos arc. All firmware and plex up to date. In Shield audio settings I deselected both DTS formats. In Plex client settings, “Passthrough” set to optical and AC3.

Just setting Plex to optical with DTS disabled would’ve been sufficient as it forces Plex to transcode for you. However, you’re going to lose Atmos/TrueHD with that config.

If it have the C9 (or any TV that supports eARC) then your goal should be getting multichannel PCM in place of DTS.
