Start Watching Recording in Progress from Beginning(Failing)

Maybe we should do a poll to find out what the minimum system requirements are.

Informally I have noticed everyone that is having success has a i7-7700K or better with at least 16GB of ram.

@pl_5309 - Where do you get that? I just did a quick search of this thread and don’t see any such inference concerning server processor, memory, nor any other minimum requirements.

In fact the only anecdotal evidence I see is that things POTENTIALLY work with PMP and/or some other outlier android specific clients.

Perhaps what would help more is for PLEX to give us an update on the year plus long investigation into these issues and tell us what they think the problem may be and whether its server and/or client related.

@adutchman - I just watched your PLEX on ROKU TV video and I don’t believe time shifting worked for you. One of the 2nd or 3rd “rewinds you did” went back to a shot of Bradshaw yet that wasn’t what had just played in your video. The picture/time shift IS moving around, it’s just to what I believe to be random spots in the stream. Also, try the left/right arrows on your remote as well as the FF and REW buttons. Please look at all 3 of your platforms again and try to be a bit more specific and make sure you’re REALLY going back/forth to the same spots in the stream when you shift back and forth. I think you’ll find that many times you’re actually ending up at the end of the buffer even though the progress bar shows otherwise. You need to be a bit more “scientific” in these tests because of the random results we’ve seen with time shifting.

Just my two cents.

Disappointing as there is another server release and again no mention of any of these issues being addressed.

FIXES:

  • (Dashboard) CPU and Memory graphs would not load on some NAS devices (#10080)
  • (Library) Some portrait videos could return the incorrect resolution value (#10586)
  • (Linux) An internal system directory could be displayed unexpectedly in the directory browser on certain NAS platforms (#10630)
  • (Transcoder) Hardware transcoding could fail on systems with recent systemd versions (#10723)
  • (Transcoder) Fixed hardware decoding of VC1
  • (Transcoder) Output streams could be corrupted in certain cases (#10709)
  • (Metadata) Improved reliability of music lookups

The ROKU TV interface is very clunky at best. I will not say that it is completely working as it should. Personally, I do not like the ROKU OS/Ecosystem/Interface or whatever it is called and have no plans to buy any ROKU devices.

I do have an Amazon Fire TV 4K box and also a Fire TV 4K Stick. However, I don’t uses these devices very often either.

My main devices for viewing TV streams including PLEX are the nVidia Shields and LG WebOS on the TVs. As as I have previously stated, Plex DVR playback on these devices is working for me.

I would say that the PLEX developers still have much work to do to get DVR functioning as it should on all supported platforms.

Nice logs… thanks for the feedback.

Back at ya?

Yes, we are working on this, however, it’s quite complex, and not a simple issue to resolve.

1.18.0.1944 seems to have fixed the android tv app freezing issue i was seeing which is good as that had the wife raging about plex

playback seems to be working about 80% of the time, we had a fail last night but luckily there was only about 5 minutes to the end of the show

Very bad answer to people who paid for that. If it was new, it could be ok, but because it was working before, I don’t see your answer very satisfactory.

Yea, something fishy going on here.

Yeah, unfortunately 80% fixed just isn’t good enough when there are other DVR solutions out there that work flawlessly compared to Plex. Unacceptable for those of us who have paid the lifetime license fee.

With a Roku Ultra as a client, 80% seems generous.

That’s not at all what I’m saying, and stop twisting my words. I’m just saying there are a LOT of parts to Plex, and it’s not simply a DVR. Working our way through what causes certain behaviours on some clients and not others, and on some server platforms and not others is complex. Think about the client and server architecture multiplier there. We are working through it, but there are lots of factors here.

I merely gave my opinion of how I interpreted what you said side-by-side with what little we know and I stand by it. I see loads of opinions in this and other threads. Some I agree with and some I don’t. Isn’t that what this is all about?

The other providers face the same issues and have figured out how to deal with things.

FWIW, I just looked at the last Plex Preview update for the ROKU announcement and nothing in the notes suggests these issues are being addressed. If they are then tell us. It’s all we ask. To many, PLEX is ONLY a LiveTV/DVR platform and since it’s a “pay for” feature they have that right. Again, my opinion.

BTW, in another post, maybe another thread, we briefly discussed client saturation. Here’s an interesting article from last June.

Man, this must be one hell of a bug for this to still be a problem. I still use Plex for my Media server but have moved over to Emby for DVR. I was hoping to give Plex DVR another try but it doesn’t look like Plex is any closer to resolving it. Keep swinging at it Plex, you’ll fix it eventually.

Sorry to hear that it is still be broken for you. It has been working for me flawlessly each and every Sunday on my nVidia Shield TV for playback with time shifting NFL Football games.

Plex Media Server is running on Windows 10 Professional.

Versions I am currently using
Plex Media Server Version 1.18.2.2015
Plex for Android TV Version 7.21.0.12323
Plex for Android Mobile Version 7.23.0.13123
Plex for LG 4.11.1
Plex for Roku 55R81

Curious… do you fast forward through commercials? Do you rewind to see a play again? Do you pause it then graze in the kitchen for 20 mins and it works fine when you un-pause it when you get back?

It works as you describe for me ONLY when the recording is done and I start watching after. Doing any of these things while the record is still ongoing leads to disastrous results.

Yes, I do all of that. I hate commercials during football games. Pause to go to bathroom and then pick up right where I left off. Many times, I FastForward to next play after and the next play to skip past the network’s replays and commentary. I almost always fast forward past the half time show. Got hungry, need to get some food, no problem. Pause and when ready, press play. Need another beer. Pause and play it when ready.

Oops… I went too far with a 30 second skip, because the team is in “hurry up mode”, no problem, just hit back button and it goes back 10 seconds and I get back to the snap.

I know many people are having issues and I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m bragging, but with my setup, it has been flawless.

I live in Missouri and have a 2nd Plex Media Server setup with HD HomeRun Prime at my brother’s house in New York so I get to see every Giants and Jets game. Used to have to wait until the games were over to do all of this time shifting but not this season.

I used to have DirecTV and in the beginning got the NFL Sunday Ticket. I was with DTV for almost 20 years. To me Satellite was the best thing going, but I got tired of playing the game of calling each year and begging for discounts. When I started considering getting divorced, I started doing my research. I was not a fan of Apple, so no Apple TV boxes. We had a FireTV box but didn’t care for it that much at the time. I didn’t like the Roku devices either (still not a fan of their interface).

I ended up going with the nVidia Shield TV and Android TV because it was supposed to be the best hardware for streaming (tech crunch) and had the bonus of being able to play games too, though I really don’t use it for games at all. I ended up getting two Shields, one for me, one for the Wife. However, I didn’t want to use the Shield for the Plex Media Server, so I build two Windows 10 PCs with Core i7 processors, plenty of RAM and storage as well. I know it was over kill, but I’m a computer tech by trade and love to build my own PCs. I don’t regret spending the extra money on the boxes.

For the TV signal, here in Missouri I went with two HD HomeRun Quads for 8 tuners, a roof top antenna. In NY I got the HD HomeRun Prime and cable card on my brother’s Verizon FIOS TV service.

I have 200 MB connection with Mediacom Cable and my brother has 1 GB connection with Verizon.

I got the Plex Pass way before they even had the DVR or LiveTV options. Back then I was using Windows Media Player. Plex still needs work on the DVR, but they’ve come a long way.

Are you really able to timeshift on a Roku? I believe you for nVidia Shield, but my TCL w/Roku is still a TOTAL fail for timeshifting. My first attempt to go back 10 seconds always goes to beginning of the buffer. My attempts to move 10 seconds ahead often end up at the end of the buffer. Roku timeshifting still appears quite broken on my system: v 1.18.1.1973 on Ubuntu with latest Roku client.
