Stuttering on Apple TV in the past few weeks

Apple TV - tvOs 15

I was following this post but it only solved it temporarily. Since the posting was marked as solved, I am opening up a new thread.

I have deleted and reinstalled the client with no luck. I was watching from a chrome browser and no one else has mentioned an issue. So I started watching a moving today and was watching logs to keep tabs on when the issue would happen. I was able to see in the corner of my eye a flood of log lines as the the stuttering would start to happen. Sharing the logs in hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

As I am writing this, this may coincide with me adding a hdhomerun for livetv and enabling that in plex. going to do some testing and report back. but curious if anyting is having issues.

I’m having the same issue with some 1080p HVEC 24p MKV content on my Apple TV 4k. Turned on Old Player and it works perfectly. I hope the Plex dev team can fix this soon!

I’m having similar issues. Playing 1080p TV episodes (mkv) is fine at first, but towards the end of the video it begins to stutter periodically.

This has only been happening in the last month, and turning on the old player seems to solve the issue.

Question for you folks, I too have been having some playback stuttering, it occurs once or twice an hour for about 2-3 seconds. During these events, the audio playback is fine. Is this what you are experiencing?

I do have a HDHomerun, I also have */5 minute SNMP polling of devices on my network, and I run Home Assistant with Plex and Tautulli integrations. I feel like this started around the time the new TVOS came out, but I could be wrong. I just switched to the old player, lets see if this helps.

Mine is more like frequent micro-stutters every 10s or so towards the end of episodes.

yeah, audio is good and the video will lag/stall watch do a fast forward catch up.

what are logs showing during the time of stuttering? anything from my logs catch your eye for you?

enabling the old player has solved for movies but not live tv for me

on my side the issue was solved disabling homerun on my Syno 918.

Interesting, seeing exact same behaviors here. Stuttering/choppy playback of HEVC 1080p content towards the end of videos. Encodes playback fine everywhere else. No transcoding, Direct Play to the Apple TV. This is on a 4th gen AppleTV (Non-4k unit). Suspiciously seems to have started fairly recently, perhaps tied to either last Plex client update or the recent tvOS update.

I do have an HD HomeRun setup, I’ll have to try disabling that to see if there’s any impact.

Tried disabling HD HomeRun, no change. Old player is a bit better but still show signs of same issue.

My 1080p apple TV is having the same issue… running on a Synology with HD HomeRun Setup.
Seems to have the most problems when there is a lot of detail moving fast on the screen. Weird thing is everything used to run fine at some point.

Old and new players both have problems but infuse on apple tv plays them fine, also they play fine on a second android box running kodi.

Also having this issue only in the past two weeks. I need to restart playback 1-3 times for it to run without stuttering.

Me too. It happens more often till the end of an episode. At first, I thought my file was corrupted, because stuttering (video seems to stall then fast forward to catch up) appears at the exact same spots on each replays. Later I played it on Plex for Samsung, and everything was perfectly smooth…

If you go into settings system then restart does it start behaving properly again?
I have had issues with Plex running like garbage if other apps have been opened. Like Netflix or Amazon prime video. I have 5 Plex instances running on a range of hardware from synology, ESX VMs using pci direct hardware transcoding on multiple quadro cards etc.
It’s very disappointing that there is so much bloat in Plex and getting access to the content on a local network without internet connectivity is waaay more of a hassle than it should be.

I have had multiple Apple TV’s the earlier version where you couldn’t install the app but could redirect things via a dns hack. I currently have 3 appletv 4K and one of the new 4K versions. (I like the old remote better.)

I am trying Emby now. It is disturbingly fast. Transcoding and playing 4K content remotely has always been difficult if not impossible for Plex. Emby does it so crazy fast, no lag, starts immediately. I am currently testing it but am impressed so far.

I have read a couple of places about Plex selling User data etc. Emby is like old school Plex in that you don’t have to login to their website to use it, you can connect directly and don’t users don’t even have to create an emby account to use it.

But anyway try rebooting it and see if it speeds up. For the last year or so it has been an issue. I never had to reboot my Apple TV more than 2-5 times a year. Now I have to do it 3 times a week.
