# Subtitle burn in while transcoding, why is this not solved?

Hi!

I’ve set up my plex server quite well, troubleshot everything possible, to find out that clients CAN direct play with .srt subs normaly OR the subs get transcoded on some clients BUUUUT when transcoding 4k to 4k or less automatically (and across all of them) makes the clients dumb and all of a sudden they need .srt BURNT in, like they don’t support them even though they CAAAAN read .srt when direct playing.

I don’t know how to fix this or why is it even happening.

Can anybody help?

Which clients are you using?

Subtitle support varies by client.

The SmartTV apps are probably the most troublesome.

To use the Plex LG app as an example:

On WebOS 3.x sets, enabling PGS subtitles results in a video transcode and subtitle burning. On WebOS 4 and higher sets, they direct play (as long as the video & audio is direct playing).

On any LG WebOS version:

If the media is direct playing, then SRT subtitles direct play.

If the media is direct streaming, such as when audio is transcoding, enabling any type of subittle results in video transcoding and subtitle burning.
