Sync is Dead (almost). Long Live Downloads! (Part 2 - iOS)

@Volts, the solution to your problem with sync as it was was simple: kids have their own login, and only you (the parent) can sync stuff. Then when they log in, their access to all content was limited as you had set it up, and they could not see ANY downloaded (synced) content, regardless of whether they had access to it while they were online. Hence, no accidental exposure of unsafe content to innocent little eyes.

Now, with the Download feature replacing Sync, all logins can see ALL content. Which means the only way I can ensure no leakage of unsafe content during a road trip is to simply disable Downloads altogether and purge all unsafe content from my device before the road trip. It’s now less useful for me! Or I have to live with a substantially increased risk of sensitive content leaking to my kids. Not good. Sorry to disagree with you, but there’s no way this is an improvement from a security standpoint. This is a backward step in this important area.

Not correct. Sync would only allow the user that started Sync to Sync more content, but all content was available to any user.

Oh, thanks!

I did test before, and didn’t see the Synced content. I just looked again, and it’s funky. It’s not there immediately after Syncing content and switching users.

  1. Delete app
  2. Install app (iOS App Store or TestFlight)
  3. Sign in as primary user
  4. Disable new Downloads
  5. Sync something
  6. Switch to another user (either Managed or Home)

Here’s where it’s weird.

The Library picker menu has two items, Downloads and Sync (Legacy). They’re both dimmed and can’t be selected.

[I’d upload a screenshot, but I don’t think the forum is allowing image attachments right now.]

  1. Either -
    a. Swap back to the primary user, or
    b. Force-quit the app
  2. Choose the other user again

Now a single Downloads & Sync option is in the Library picker menu, as expected.

After choosing Downloads & Sync, the screen is empty for a few seconds. Eventually the Synced content does appear. It takes longer on a slow device.

[Feel free to move this if it’s appropriate for a different thread. I wonder if this behavior changed when the new Downloads were introduced, however.]

That’s why it’s best to remove any old Synced content if using Downloads or vice versa. The code is still a bit rough for handling both. That’s also contributing to the decision to remove Sync eventually.

I don’t follow. I was careful not to mix the two - that’s why I uninstalled the app before testing. Did I miss a step?

The first time a user signs in on a device, they can’t see content that was Synced by another user. It becomes available when they sign in a second time.

I’m just saying there are some odd behavior when using both, not necessarily in your test case.

The first time a user signs in on a device, they can’t see content that was Synced by another user. It becomes available when they sign in a second time.

Yes I see this too. Looks like you can also get this working by toggling the “Downloads/Sync” setting. My guess is the new default to enable Downloads isn’t working for other users when switching to them for the first time. Likely only checking on “sign in” and not on “switch user”.

Ahh, gotcha!

I was just testing to try to figure out why I had been confused.

I’m only really using Downloads. Most of my media is already compatible, and being able to download without conversion is a huge improvement.

Having to keep the app open is annoying, and I still hope Santa brings background download support.

But Downloads are already three steps forward, and the progress (and communication) is appreciated.

(I just noticed the warning about Sync says it will be removed in 2021, FYI.)

That’s an OS thing. AFAIK, there isn’t a way to force the app to stay active in the background. Once it’s no longer in the foreground, the OS takes over when it gets closed. I’ve had some luck with my iPad downloading in the background, but I don’t have anything else installed that could potentially take the focus away from the app so it continues to work and Download. The OS has no reason to close the app. Hopefully this will continue but it could change at any time since we do not have control.

Just downloaded Plex App v7.27
IPadOS 15.2

Good News - Downloads finally d/l without stalling
Bad News - Downloads now report “Error Downloading” and attempts to re-download, but still fails.

Log file attached.

See my update post, Update on new Downloads feature. Sounds like you are running into issue 2. Try the work around mentioned there or try another show in a different genre.

For what it is worth:

I have nothing but challenges with the iOS and downloading from my plex server. Found an article on DNS rebinding that mentions that it needs be turned off. Update on new Downloads feature Topic number 4.

However, didn’t really want to disable it. But what I did do was add the IP address to the alternative hostname under the DNS rebinding check box. (Pfsense router)

Now I can download to the iOS devices.

I have disabled the sleep after X minutes and then leave the screen on and it downloads. :pensive:

That wasn’t it, (No Genre tag in XML)

You need to check the XML for the show, not an individual episode. There isn’t a way to do this with just a button click.

  • call up XML for an episode
  • find the value for grandparentRatingKey
  • edit the URL and replace the number you find here in the xxxx location /library/metadata/xxxx with the value from the previous step

I found the grandparentRatingKey, but not sure which URL to edit with this number

Also, if the “conflict between the PMS and local database”, wouldn’t re-installing the App resolve the conflict?

The URL is what is already shown in the browser when you got the XML, edit that. Reinstalling the app does not resolve the issue since the data is in your PMS database already. We have a fix coming but it’s not ready yet.

Thanks. If I can’t get it to work, I’ll wait for the fix.

@anon18523487 I just experienced a weird issue. I’ve downloaded a episode on my mobile phone which worked great. But I can’t select the English audio stream. It only plays in German and I can’t switch it. Is this a known issue?

Did you specify you wanted the German audio track when you downloaded? If a file has to trancode, it will only include 1 audio track.

How can I specify the language? My default settings are english audio with english subtitles. I do not have to change anything if I watch a movie or an episode. But if I download there is no option available to specify explicitly that I wan’t to download the file with an english audio track.
