# Sync Transcode codec

Does anyone know whether there is a way to choose the codec for audio transcodes for mobile sync? The default is mp3, although the quality at the same bitrate is better with AAC (m4a).

Plex chooses to transcode to the codec combination that works best on your device. There is no way to choose which it transcodes into as far as i am aware. The other option is to make a .aac file from the audio track in the video, and slip it into the file (if mkv file, using mkvtoolnix for example), and then select the .aac file from the selectable audio and see if it stops transcoding and just direct plays…
