Having an issue currently where when setting up a library PMS cannot see any directories in my Media directory.

I have DSM7 on a DS415+ x86_64 unit
DSM version is the current stable - DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 3
Got the installer from here, file is ‘PlexMediaServer-1.25.8.5663-e071c3d62-x86_64_DSM7.spk’
Seems to have installed correctly

I have a share called Media and in it are sub dirs Movies, Music, TV etc…etc…
When adding a Library and getting the the point of selecting a directory i can brows /volume1/Media but at that point the contents of media are not shown thus leaving me unable to select ‘Movies’ .

Attempting to progress and see if the scan will pickup something anyway ends with nothing happening and no media found.

Here is the structure of my Media share

Things of note, in users there is no user called PlexMediaServer
However if i attempt to create this user DSM will not allow it saying the user already exists.

Have used PLEX with success in the past on DSM6 but stopped using it for a year and wanted to start fresh now on DSM7.

A bit lost at this point, any assistance appreciated.

So a minute after posting this i found ‘PlexMediaServer’ as a System Internal User in the permissions area for the share…

And granted it read permission for the Media.

The database recovery worked!

But now the PMS stops almost daily and I have to go into the Package Center to Run it.

I am currently running version 1.25.7.5604, and have yet to upgrade to Version 1.25.8.5663. Waiting to see if everything was stable.

I think it might be when PMS performs a maintenance File Scan or Metadata.

I looked in your logs for crash activity however all the scanner activity rolled any failures off the end of the buffer.

Keep the SPK for 1.25.7 handy just in case.
Download and try 1.25.8 as it can’t hurt.

I personally keep several versions handy. My production system has 3 known-stable

I just updated to DSM 7. Are there any legacy users, volumes or groups I should delete?

There are two volumes: “Plex” and “PlexMediaServer”. There are two accounts: “plex” and “PlexMediaServer” (under System internal user). There is one group: “video”.

When installing, my Plex did not migrate (I have to manually re-add my libraries). There are two available Plex serves to choose from (one that is unable to be connected).

For posterity, fix for me was to uninstall Plex, manually delete the PlexMediaShare volume and reinstall. This migrated successfully.

You did something wrong.

The DSM installer will take ALL your contents from Plex → PlexMediaServer
so you don’t have to reinstall.

The installer WILL NOT migrate the contents of the Plex shared folder if it sees an existing server in PlexMediaServer. ( I prohibit overwriting an active server ). If you tried to do anything manually, the installer will stay ‘hands off’.

The installer / migration process starts automatically if a valid server is found in the Plex shared folder.

Can you show me what you have in Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server ?

I think I dun goofed. I did read the post you have linked, and I thought it said that once the migration completed, I could remove the user “Plex” and the volume labeled “Plex” with the new user and volume now being labeled “PlexMediaServer.” However, after doing so, I am unable to connect to the DiskStation. Do I have to restart my Plex server? I cannot access Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server.

It does say that removing the Plex user is fine

User Plex is no longer needed.

DSM 7 required the username to change. We therefore decided to use PlexMediaServer to match the package name.

As such, you are free to delete user Plex .

The Installer would have done this for you but no longer has any system-level privileges to do so.

Everything seems to be working smoothly now.

Hi all, Please i need someones help. i just got the synology 220+ with the lastest version installed manually. It works for 2 mins after install and defaults to ask me to run the package when it should remain on open. i have been battling this for 3 days now and i need help please

Please open the PlexMediaServer shared folder with FileStation

Drill down until you see “Logs”.

Right-Click “Logs” → Compress to Logs.zip

download and attach please.

PLEASE STOP what you’re doing. You are breaking PMS and causing it to fail.

Did you not see the warnings I placed in 6 languages to not place any media the PlexMediaServer shared folder about not placing media in it?

You must get ALL your media OUT of the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

From what I see, it looks like you have a torrent downloader set to deposit media there and then told Plex to look for media there.

What this does is PMS ends up creating an infinite loop where it spends all its time monitoring itself.

1. Change your downloading program to use something other than the PlexMediaServer shared folder.
2. Put your media files themselves into their own shares (“Movies” and “TV”)
3. Delete and then recreate your library sections to point to these new locations
