There’s an existing suggestion asking for an option to filter a library for members of a playlist.
With that you could also easily create a new collection (advanced filter by playlist presence → save as collection). Alternatively you could select the filtered content and use the add-to menu to add the items to an existing collection.
It’s not the same approach you’re describing but would enable the same outcome.
