Tvheadend, plex server and RPi configuration in 2022

Server Version#: 4.87.2
Tuner Make/Model: Sony CXD2880 (PiTV Hat)

Hello everybody,
I have been wanting to be able to watch digital TV directly from Plex for some time now. I am aware of the fact that the tuner I have (PiTV HAT on Raspberry Pi02W - now with 64bit bullseye RPiOS) is not officially supported, however I have noticed that many have managed to make it work the same mainly through TVHeadend and TVHproxy / Antenna (also present here on the Forum but now obsolete). To date, however, all similar projects to do this are incompatible or too “old” to work. To date (September 2022) does anyone know how to advise me on a still working method to access my TVheadend channels also from Plex? Thank you.

Marco

Considering that tvHeadend/tvhProxy pretty well emulate an HDHomeRun tuner which is high on the recommended tuner list, I’m not worried about my solution going out of date any time soon. I’m also aware that aware that as soon as PMS makes the connection to tvhProxy and thus, tvHeadend, all support is on me.

I am no expert at all as I use HDHomerun tuners, but here is a thread where TVheadend is discussed. The two posters going back and forth uses xteve to connect TVheadend setup to Plex.

Hi, thanks for the advice. I tried to read the indicated tread, but I can’t get it to work. I should try to understand better how it works so as to understand how to configure it correctly on a raspberry (I find most of the guides for Windows).

I use tvheadend and tvhproxy for my 3rd party tuner.

The basic traffic overview is as follows:
plex → tvhproxy:5004 → tvheadend:9981

For tvhproxy you just need it to point to your tvheadend server

In tvheadend, in its GUI configuration → base you need to ensure
Authentication type: Both plain and digest

With the above config, when you add a tuner in Plex it should find tvhproxy (it will report as a HDHomeRun as that’s what it emulates), tvhproxy will then connect to tvheadend.

If you can get your tuner to work in tvheadend then something similar to above should work for you.

These days I have tried again to configure TVhProxy. First as a docker container, but without success (not finding images compatible with ARM64), then I tried with snap (but it is useless as you cannot modify the config file). Finally I tried in the classic way and, while giving me an error saying that port 5004 was already occupied, trying to search for the DVR from Plex, it finally started to search for channels.
Strangely it finds fewer channels than tvheadend, but apart from this little “problem” I can finally see the DTT channels from Plex.
Thanks anyway for the advice.
