# Two different Plex servers on same data - one sees episodes, other doesn't

Server Version#: 1.40.2.8395-c67dce28e and 1.41.4.9463-630c9f557

tl;dr: I have two different installations of Plex server on my TrueNAS 24.04 system, both pointing to the same data. One sees my entire library of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (13 seasons plus specials), while the other sees only four episodes in Season 2 (Eps 1, 3, 5, and 6).

The first installation is of the first version above (1.40.2.8395-c67dce28e), installed via TrueCharts, using the last version of their Helm chart from around nine months ago. The second is of the second version listed (1.41.4.9463-630c9f557), running via Docker Compose using the official Docker image (`plexinc/pms-docker:latest`).

Checking the “Get info” through the web client, here’s the XML from an episode that the second system sees:

I find no mention of the second file anywhere in the logs of the second installation, even after triggering a library scan. I believe the file/directory structure is appropriate:

I note that the episodes recognized by the second installation have their own directories, with subdirectories of `Plex Versions`, though the files in those directories don’t appear to be the ones that are being used by that installation of the server. I don’t see those directories present for any other episode.

I’m kind of at a loss for where to look next–any suggestions?

Why do you keep some of the episodes in a subfolder of the season?  
Are both libraries pointing to the same library folder?

I have no idea, and I don’t believe I manually created them. But I think it’s noteworthy that the only episodes that are showing up in the second installation are the ones that have these subfolders.

The fact that those subfolders themselves have subfolders called `Plex Versions` suggests that Plex itself had something to do with creating them, but that’s nothing more than a guess on my part.

Yes, both installations are pointing to the same directories on the same storage pool.

`Plex Versions` implies you either manually triggered for those episodes to be optimized, or configured a section of the library / playlist to be optimized.  
That being said… the optimized ones should be the files inside the `Plex Versions` folder.

It could well be that there’s been a change tightening some of the naming schemas for tv shows during the last 12 months (PMS version 1.40.2.8395 was released in April 2024).

So it might be worth a shot to clean-up those files and check if/how you can upgrade the first server.

My intent is to decommission it, once I have the second one reading the library files correctly; one of the reasons is that there isn’t a workable upgrade path available.

But, again, the other episodes–which don’t have the subfolders, and appear (to me, at least) to be correctly named–aren’t seen by the newer installation. Neither are any episodes from any other season, which don’t have any subfolders going on. Here’s Season 1:

The first installation (the 1.40 one) sees all of these (as well as the other 10 seasons); the second only sees Season 2, and only those four episodes of that season.

Can you confirm that all files (also the ones of the “missing” seasons are visible to the account running the PMS inside your container?

Did you already test if the files might have been added to your library as duplicates of other episodes (e.g. by filtering the library for `Duplicates` while displaying it `By Episodes`)?

So plex is seeing files, and is processing them. From the logs I have I am seeing episodes from Season 0, 1, 4. along with `REPLAY` which doesnt follow the naming standards.

I would try stopping/starting Plex, doing the [Plex Dance](https://forums.plex.tv/t/the-plex-dance/197064) on the show and then uploading a fresh copy of your logs (The logs you uploaded do not contain the startup sequence ) I also suspect you have permissions issues:

The second scan of the [Plex Dance](https://forums.plex.tv/t/the-plex-dance/197064) is still running, but already things are looking much better. I left out the REPLAY files when copying the data back (I think they’d get numbered somewhere among the specials; once I figure that out I can name them properly and move them to the `Season 0` folder), and also the `Specials` and `Season KTMA` folders (the contents of which, again, probably belong somewhere in `Season 0`). But it’s showing Seasons 0-13 as expected, and at least at a glance, it’s showing the correct number of episodes for each.

I thnk this was the key, though I find it somewhat surprising. At least four different Plex installations pointing to this data have given exactly the same result–the same four episodes in Season 2 are recognized, and nothing else is. It isn’t a result of cruft in the library; each of these was a fresh installation. But apparently one or more of these files/directories broke things pretty badly, because without them, Plex recognizes all the episodes of all the seaons (and I’m playing one of them right now).

I’d have expected that misnamed files could keep those files from being recognized, but not that they’d keep other files from being recognized–but apparently they can.

Its a fairly common issue of poor naming causing collateral issues. Odds are the miss-named files got scanned to some random show, and that caused further chaos inside of plex. Its one of the key reasons we stress naming. And after fixing the naming the only way to reset the associations is to do the [plex dance](https://forums.plex.tv/t/the-plex-dance/197064).
