Unable to login via Plex Web Player on Windows 10

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2457
Player Version#: 4.22.2
OS Windows 10.

I started noticing issues today when I tried to access the PMS library through my Plex Web Player. Issue is that when login with my id, it authenticates and the it tries to redirect me to my PMS. But as soon as the redirect takes place, I get an error “There was an error signing in” and it shows my id and option to sign in again. I sign in again, and it does auth again, and then redirect and then error. This process goes on forever if you keep trying to signin.

I launch the plex web player by right clicking on Plex Icon my windows tasks on the bottom right hand corner by the clock and date select “open plex”. It opes my default browser and then asks me to login, and then as I explained about the issue occurs.

At this point the only other option I have left is to access my PMS is to right click on Plex Icon in windows task view on the bottom right hand corner by the clock and date, uncheck “Start Plex Server at login”, and at the same time, I must be logged into my plex account on the plex.tv. Only then I can get in, otherwise, back to the loop of entering the credentials, auth success, redirect and “error”!!

here is a bit more information.

  1. Start the plex server.
  2. “Open Plex” from task manager icon.
  3. Browser opens http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html
  4. Redirects to login page
  5. Presented with login page.
  6. Login with email
  7. Enter credentials.
  8. Authenticates and then redirects to http://127.0.0.1:32400/media/providers?X-Plex-Product=Plex%20Web&X-Plex-Version=4.22.2&X-Plex-Client-Identifier=xnlf5bdj0dw1m8kyuo1rl31e&X-Plex-Platform=Firefox&X-Plex-Platform-Version=73.0&X-Plex-Sync-Version=2&X-Plex-Features=external-media%2Cindirect-media&X-Plex-Model=bundled&X-Plex-Device=Windows&X-Plex-Device-Name=Firefox&X-Plex-Device-Screen-Resolution=1920x427%2C1920x1200&X-Plex-Language=en
  9. Browser refreshes
  10. Error: There was an error signing in. Reviewed the network trace and reason for this is because the response to the login request is “401 Unauthorized”.
  11. Option to sign in again.
  12. Click on Sign in again and go through the same loop.
  13. Go to Plex.tv
  14. Click on Sign In
  15. Sign in pop-up flashes and the goes away saying that already logged in.
  16. Logged into Plex.tv
  17. click “Launch”
  18. Present with users to login with.
  19. Click on the user which is myself clicking on my user name badge.
  20. Plex is now accessible.

Did something change in the way authentication works? How do I get this to work without having to login in to plex.tv site every time? Why am I not able to login and shows “unauthorized” when trying to use the link to my local machine where the plex server is running?

No response from this question? I’m having the same exact problem and nothing in the log files showing anything to help troubleshoot the issue. I am a Plex pass lifetime member and can login to plex.tv, this forum, everything else fine except for my own plex server on my own computer. Which as above states I’ve logged in successfully but then redirect seems to fail. Running Windows 10 and latest version of plex server.

Let me add some info. If I right click and click ‘check for updates’ it logs in fine and allows me in. Just right clicking and the ‘open plex’ option seems to exhibit this behavior. I can poke around sometimes and get in other ways. This issue has been going on for quite sometime. I would like a response of somehow to troubleshoot this issue from my end. I’ve disabled all vpn, virus scanners, malware detectors, and most other background process to see if any of them are interfering with plex to no avail. It is quite frustrating to not be able to login to your own server without some trick. If you need additional information I’ll be glad to provide any log info or whatever is required. I’ve been running plex for 5+ years (probably much longer) and really like it or I wouldn’t have a plex lifetime pass.

I have the same problem and finally gave up trying to fix it. Instead, I just set up a desktop shortcut which I labeled “Plex Media Server” and specified therein the URL: https://app.plex.tv/desktop. One click and you’re in. No ID or Password required. HTH

I have been having the same problem for months now. Ridiculous!

Anatares’ solution is a nice workaround but I got into Plex because it was LOCAL. I don’t want to sign in through the Net for a machine that I purposely keep in my house.

What if my Internet is down?!? I can’t sign into my own server! Bullsh!t

…and if Internet logon is necessary because of the new features that Plex has added, then those features should be optional at the server level so I can keep my local logon.

(Sorry for the rant. Big build-up. Long time coming)
