Unable to remotely download content to Player 18.5 on iOS when not on my local network

Server Version#: most current
Player Version#:18.5
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I am only able to download content to Plex Player (18.5) on my iPad when connected to my local network. I cannot download content remotely. Even though Settings>Remote Access shows “Fully accessible outside your Network”. I have an AT&T Humax BGW320-500 router. I went under Firewall>NATGaming and setup the Manually specified port. That is what made the “Fully accessible outside your Network” status turn on. But I still can’t access it outside my network.

I have two instances of Plex Media Server, one PMS running on my Synology DS1821+ and another running on a PC. Both Servers show “Fully accessible outside your network”. But I cannot download to my iPad from either server outside my local network.

Can you play things without downloading?

I have the same issue. I can stream/play movies and shows when remote but cannot download. Server / Network settings are unchanged.

I flagged in this post Downloads still not starting on iOS (after v2025.17.0)

I have tried with the general release version v2025.17.0 and the Test Flight Beta version 2025.18.0 (1098)
Both have the same issue.

So when you hit download is there an error or nothing happens at all? There is nothing in the “In Progress” tab when on the downloads screen?

Hi,
When I press ‘Download’ for the item, the dialog box says ‘Download has been queued’ on the main library screen, then by the time I switch to Downloads-In Progress, the item says ‘Download Failed’ .
I can then touch the ‘info’ icon for the failed item, which gives me the ability to ‘Remove’ or ‘Re-add to the Queue’
If I re-add to the queue, the item says ‘Queued’ and then almost immediately says ‘Download Failed’

ok I am going to close that other topic in favor of this one with more replies

Can you grab the mobile app logs so we can hopefully see why it failed.

You don’t have Plex Pass so assuming you are downloading from someone else’s server. Can you ask your friend if other people have issues downloading from their server.

I have DM’ed the files to you.
I am part of the ‘Home’ group of the Plex admin who has a life time pass.
The Plex admin also has exactly the same issue.

Is there any ETA on a fix for this, as the bug has been present for weeks now.

Still not fixed with Beta 2025.19.0

I’m on version 2025.19.0 and experiencing the exact same issue. I am the Plex Pass (Lifetime) user/admin. Very frustrating…I travel for work and am away from home for extended periods. Remote downloading was a primary use case for me.

The issue is still present with Beta 2025.20.0 (1144)

@christophe9526 could you check the behaviour again in 2025.21.0 or later?

When I dug into this issue it appeared that it was failing due to no connection to a server, obviously you had a connection, but I believe it was a relay connection, which does not allow for downloading.

We’ve made some messaging changes to the error to indicate that the download failed while on a relay connection that should make this more clear and we’re working on some improvements to show the connection state in Libraries.

If the failure indicates it was a relay connection then you’ll want to troubleshoot your remote access, if it’s a generic or other failure reason updated client and server logs would be helpful to diagnose further.

Thanks for the update.
I am on the latest Beta 2025.22.0 and it now produces the error message you mentioned which is ‘Relay Connection Error’.

As I can access the libraries and stream content without issue, which demonstrates that the Relay Connection works, why does it not permit downloads?

As nothing has changed on the remote network for over a year, has Plex changed the way it accesses remote connections for downloads?

Thanks,
Chris

Downloads weren’t meant to be accessed via relay, if that worked previously it was in error. The support document linked is up to date at this time and indicates that downloads over relay connections are not supported.

When using our “Downloads” feature to download content, the download itself cannot be performed over a Relay connection (you should perform the download while you are on the same local network as the server)

I’m having this same issue and I’m not using a relay connection. I’ve verified that the direct connection is working
