Unable to view HDHomeRun Prime Channels though plex

#1

Hello all,

Recently I purchased an HDHomerun Prime from Silicon Dust however, i have not been able to view my live tv content through my plex app on various devices (PS4 app, IOS App, Windows app). I have tried several plugins (HD Grand Slam, HDHR View, HDHR View 2). My HDHomerun Prime device is able to see all of my channels though the website and i am able to see my channels within the plex app. When I select the channel I wish to watch I either get a buffer (Chrome Web Browser) or the channel takes too long to load and I am unable to view it. My cable provider is Spectrum (used to be TWC) I am on their 60 MB/s internet and all of my devices are connected via Ethernet. I am assuming it is the plugin that i have DL and am trying to use. Another problem i am having is being able to DVR channels that are designated as DRM. Any help would be very much appreciated. Let me know if I need to supply with any additional information.

I can confirm the grand slam and hd viewer 2 work without issue via Plex web, open pht and iOS. In fact, my little brother watches my cable remotely by accessing the plugins on his roku.

I assume you can use the native hdhomerun app without any problems? If so, that would be odd. You entered the correct ip on the plugins?

What are you running PMS on? You might want to attempt to use one of the plugins, then when it fails, grab the server and plugin logs and post them. Also at the beginning of this section is documentation of steps to check when a plugin fails. The disconnect is on your end (not being critical, happens to all of us). It shouldn't be difficult to resolve.

My PMS is running on windows 10 64 but. The hdhomerun app I assume you are talking about is the one used to setup a cable card. Yes that runs without a hitch. I have entered the correct up address of my device into the plugin copied straight from the device. The only thing I am unsure of is how to get the logs you are talking about.

Questions about the use of DVR in Plex should be directed to the DVR (Beta) section of the forum.

If you are instead referring to a Plex channel plugin that you have installed on your Plex Media Server, the channel you mention is not listed in the Channel Directory, therefore it would be considered Channels from Other Sources, which are also known as unsupported channels.

Unsupported channels are often less stable, require special instructions and may even no longer be maintained or supported by its developer. Since these channels stability, support, and specifications vary so much, as the name implies, unsupported channels do not and cannot be supported by the larger volunteer channel community. Therefore, you must treat any issues with any unsupported channels individually and use the support options offered by each unsupported channel's developer to resolve any issues with each channel.

See How do I get support for unsupported channels? and the pinned topic SUPPORT: Find my Plug-In here for support for a list of known support topics for unsupported channels. If the unsupported channel plugin is not listed in that pinned topic list, you would need to refer to the source where you found it (like a website or Github repository) to find any support options offered by its developer.

You can not DVR channels that are DRM protected - or even watch them using any of the available apps or channel plugins (except for the Xbox One that has been HDMI DRM certified)

I'm referring to HDhomerun native app that you use to watch your cable on.
Sorry I meant what hardware are you running plex media server on?

I think I missed this before- you can see your channels via the hdhomerun plugins for plex but you're getting buffering, or it stalls out, correct?

server logs will probably give some insight. You can download them via plex web. Go to settings-server-help and you'll see the option to 'download logs'. Try to play one of the plugins and when it fails, download the logs and post just the 'plex media server.logs' (just the one without a number following)

thank you all for your responses. I found out the reason plex doesn't run certain channels is because it does not support DRM channels. which a majority of my channels have that designation. so my next question which has already been post but have no answer ti is... when will plex support DRM protected channels?

They may( guessing not though), but it will\would take quite some time as protected paths would need to be written into the code.
(DRM still would not work remotely)

Can Plex not even Play DRM Channels? When setting up HDHomeRun in the Live TV and DVR section of Plex it only allows like 12 of my 360 subscribed channels. It finds them all but they all list protected and of course are not added to the listing. This sucks I was super hopeful I could drop all of my Spectrum crap hardware in favor of my own setup. I don’t care if I can’t DVR because of DRM but I’d at least like to be able to watch Live TV!

No… No DRM at all!!

What about HD Homerun + CableCARD + Tuning Adapter? I thought perhaps getting a tuning adapter from Cox would help (the tech said it is needed with Tivo). I tried, but wondering…perhaps I am missing something? Thanks.

Not getting any channels ? Or just few ? Cox Arizona, there are about 30 channels without DRM. If you are getting no channels, swap out CableCard with Cox. I had same issue initially.

Yes Tuning Adapter is required in AZ for Cox.

Thanks. I do get 30 channels. So, I am taking the HD Homerun Prime back. Using HD Homerun Quatro and I’ve switched to a digital antenna. Got about 80 channels. Whittled down to about 25 that I want. Going to save about $60/month! The only thing is that NBC is a bit buggy to tune.

Sorry, a bit off topic but so happy with this. Canceling cable in about a month. They would have kept me if they would have not had all those channels DRM’d. Worried they will do the same with OTA channels eventually.

Silicon Dust has been trying to get certification for the DRM channels. supposedly DRM is suppose to be available on there new 6 tuner prime out later this year. We’ll just have to see how it works with Plex.

DRM will not work with Plex… at this time at least.
Plex would need to provide protected paths(re-writing plex) for the content throughout the chain.
