# Using Plex Media Server off the grid

Is there a best practice or set of tools for getting metadata into a Plex Server that is not connected to the Internet? Like with side-car metadata files?

If I take media from my main house on a thumb drive to a much smaller server in a second house, how can I transport most of the associated metadata and have Plex import it?

You can’t. Plex needs a connection to the internet. At least intermittently.
