Has anyone tested for you with the e-601a?

I've got a lot of E-xxxa testers, and 3 in particular of the 60 inch variety.

Would you be able to tell me if they've had positive results? Thank you.

Yes. Definitely. Just about the only one that I have seen with not so great media support is my own M550NV. But it still handles mp4 like a champ.

What about HEVC/H.265?  Not necessarily for 2160P (4K) support, but for the upto 1/2 file size of AVC/H.264 ;)

This CrashPlayer is an exciting development!   :)

Yeah, the TVs themselves handle the media decoding. Software decoding is too slow to do on TVs with the speed of their low-speed CPUs, so all the decoding has to be handled directly in the hardware. Any new Vizios seem to have really good support for many codecs. For all the testers helping me out with the CRASHPlayer app testing, we have found that most TVs bought in the last year or so will direct play nearly everything we throw at them, including mkv, avi, mp4, m4v, wmv, containers. They also seem to support most video codecs, though most everything is h.264 anymore. And most audio formats, like aac, ac3, dts/dca, etc. I've been really impressed with the newer TVs, which is another reason we decided to not worry about transcoding support for the first release of CRASHPlayer.

I'm not aware of anyone trying anything like that, but if you have a sample file you can send me, I'd be happy to try it out and have a couple people try it. Obviously, don't send me any kind of copyrighted material.

Here are HEVC/H.265 samples:

HEVC/H.265 is now in VLC, but has to be enabled at build time, and other tools are starting to roll it in too...

***Here's some .MP4 HEVC/H.265 samples, which will likely end up being the most common:

I'll see what I can come up with. Thanks!

Worth noting, Vizio specifically claims HEVC/H.265 support on their new P-Series and Reference Series HDTVs:

I read this article some weeks ago:

It mentions a Plex app, but my Sister cannot find it on the TV she just bought from Costco 2 weeks ago. Even if she does find it, not sure what it supports (such as viewing shared media from me).

Yeah, I have had a lot of people looking out for this, and I've been in communication with both Plex and Yahoo and I haven't been able to find this app anywhere. I have seen speculation that some of the new TVs may be going Google TV, which already has a plex app. I was under the impression that the VIA+ was Google TV, but now I'm not so sure about that. I am still speculating that there might be some Vizio TVs trying out the Google TV platform soon, but there are also supposed to be some significant updates to the Yahoo stuff and new TVs for Vizio in 2014 with Yahoo, so????????

Are there any other confirmed Vizio articles other than the PR Newswire stating Vizio is updating its apps in 2014 to include Plex?

HI:

I'm sure all eyes are on the prize.  Any more hints as to when they might let it be available?

thanks

Sorry, I haven't been updating over here very much.

Latest update is that Vizio currently has the app and is supposedly actively testing it. I hope to see the app on the TVs in the next couple weeks. This QA process has been quite lengthy. We found a few bugs that were generally pretty minor, and some of them were on devices we hadn't tested. In the process, I uncovered the biggest reason for apps crashes on this platform and a really simple workaround that solved a crashing bug they had open to me, and now the app is so solid, I can't get it to crash even on my old TV. I can make the Netflix and a few other apps without too much effort, so that's a good thing.

Another important note... The app will be FREE on the TVs. Originally I had planned to charge $2-4 to make up for some of the many hours I have put into this. But starting April 30th, Yahoo will no longer be selling apps. If developers want to make money off the apps, we have to monetize it ourself in the application with in app purchases or other licensing. That is so not worth it. It would take me as much effort to build and support an infrastructure to handle credit card and licensing as it has taken me so far to build the app. So, the app will be free and I will rely on donations for those that feel the app is worth helping keep me motivated. :)

I've got a donation URL put together through Paypal. Thanks to those who have already found it and donated. All donations are appreciated. https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=support%40crashplayer.com&lc=US&item_name=CRASHPlayer.com&currency_code=USD&bn=PP-DonationsBF%3Abtn_donateCC_LG.gif%3ANonHosted

This is great news! I'll be looking forward to using plex nativily in the coming months. Thanks for all your hardwork and effort!

I just bought a Vizeo TV and I thought about returning/switching to a Samsung TV for Plex app while reading first few pages.

But thanks to crashbob I guess I don't have to! Unless its only available on upcoming new Vizio TVs?

Crashbob, do you know when the app might be out? I'll most definitely be donating once its out!

The best guess I have right now is a couple weeks. But it will be available for all Yahoo TV devices, old and new.

What formats (audio/video) will be natively "direct play" supported?  Will that depend on the tv's native compatibility?

Yes, that is purely dependent on your TV. New TVs seem to have good support for most formats. Older TVs support mp4 and wmv. I have to convert all my media to mp4 for my TV to play it. Officially only mp4 and wmv are supported through the yahoo platform, but since it really depends on the firmware in the TV, the support varies.

So direct play only concerns the container? Or does the .mp4 have to be h.262/mp3 combination or h.264/aac for that matter.
