No, the audio codec and video codec are also important. The official support is mp4/h.264/aac, but I make all my MP4s with ac3 and it works fine. I know on the newer TVs, I have used mkv/h.264/dca as well. I don't know if I tried dts/dca on my own TV or not. I can't remember the official supported wmv codecs, but who uses wmv anyway? :)
Hi. New to the forum. I have owned 3 Vizio tv's for the past year but only discovered last week that I could play video wirelessly through the media player app. If I can play through a Plex app that would be even better based on what I've read. How would I go about installing the app (or where can I look for instructions). Do I need to update firmware? Thanks.

The app is still in the Vizio Quality Control process which appears to be much slower then most expected. Best place to keep status is https://www.facebook.com/crashplayertv
I hope this goes through and thank you to all that help push it :-)
Ok, here is what you have been waiting for. I've got CRASHPlayer open sourced and ready for community collaboration.
I know I kicked off the open-source idea when we started to get frustrated about the process to get this approved on Vizio TVs. I have since talked with Vizio and understand what is going on. But now even more I feel that open-source is the way to go with CRASHPlayer for many reasons. Most specifically because I don't plan to try to make money directly from CRASHPlayer (though donations are appreciated) and if there isn't profit to be made, there is no reason to be proprietary. Everyone should be able to help make this app what we all feel it should be. This shouldn't be seen as a way to bypass the Vizio QA process. They are diligently working to get this approved and into the Yahoo store. I am opening this up for community collaboration because I believe in open-source software and I think the best way to make a good app is collaboration from a lot of developers and not just me trying to make this happen all on my own. This was a step I had planned to make soon anyway, so I just decided to step it up a little bit.
As we know, Vizio publicly announced a Plex app for their platform, but we don't know when it will be available. To that end, I am not sure how much enthusiasm we still have with collaborating on CRASHPlayer, or if we should just wait for an official app to show up. I am willing to continue working with this community as long as people are willing to contribute.
I've put the project up on github athttps://github.com/crashbob/CRASHPlayer
Instructions and links to documentation to help out with the project and to install on your your TV for testing and development can be found in the INSTALL document here:
https://github.com/crashbob/CRASHPlayer/blob/master/INSTALL
I'll work on moving issues and features into the github issue tracker so people have more idea where they can contribute. I'll admit up front (as I have before) that I am not an expert developer and I also hacked some parts of this code together pretty quickly. There is a lot of ugly code and plenty of duplicated code and I'm happy to accept pull requests to get it cleaned up. I am not able to get to all these changes on my own, nor do I have the expertise to really make this a polished app from a code perspective, so any assistance you want to provide is appreciated.
We also need solid testing. We have worked out a lot of bugs through the initial QA process, but the disparity of devices this can be installed on means there surely are some other issues we have yet to find and fix. Anyone willing to test and help find issues, please send any problem reports to support at crashplayer dot com and we can work through them and open issue reports as necessary.
Again, I'll judge the interest in continuing this project by the amount of contribution in both development and testing. If we do seem to have interest, I'll come up with a build process and a way to get recent builds out so we can test bug fixes and new features.
Thanks again to everyone for the support and staying behind me as we move CRASHPlayer into a whole new world of development and advancement.
Donations can be made to: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_donations&business=support%40crashplayer.com&lc=US&item_name=CRASHPlayer.com¤cy_code=USD&bn=PP-DonationsBF%3Abtn_donateCC_LG.gif%3ANonHosted
Or if you have donated and are not able to get what you expect out of CRASHPlayer, I'll be happy to refund your donation anytime in the next two weeks. After that, I might just spend it.
These developments have been rather timely, as I just brought home a new Vizio E500i for the bedroom. I'm trying to avoid pulling any wires through walls, so I figured why not serve up media via DLNA. Well, that failed (mostly), with most files not wanting to play. I ended up installing Plex server on my HTPC (MacMini) and found Crashplayer. It was loaded on the TV the first day.
So far, Crashplayer has been great! I've only made it fail on two things.
1) EyeTV recordings (native recordings from an older HDHomerun, in MPEG-2 format).
2) HDSurfer Plug in. (possibly related to #1).
As for #1: I get the error, "Sorry. Your TV doesn't support Direct Play of this media or cannot get to the media"
Interestingly, if I use the Elgato EyeConnect DLNA server, not only can I see the files, but I can stream them just fine without any transcoding. EyeConnect shows 4% CPU utilization on a Core2Duo MacMini.
Is there an easy modification that would allow the MPEG-2 files to stream?
The MPEG-2 files will stream to Plex on Android, however they are transcoded (making my poor little Mac work very hard, 130-140% CPU for that).
And for #2? I figure having HDSurfer work with Crashplayer is like having my cake and eating it too. If it did work, then I won't need to run an RG6 cable from the attic (above 2nd floor) to my bedroom (first floor). I'm pretty selfish.
Hi , I installed Crashplayer a couple of weeks back and must say its been a great pleasure to use it . I am wondering if there's anyway to use the plex android remote control with it . The android app looks for plex clients .Could crashplayer be adapted to work with it ? Does anyone know of any plex remote for android that would interface with crashplayer ? Thanks so much for a fantastic app .
Is there any update on the official Plex app for Vizio smart apps? Press release was 8 months ago.
Can’t find crash player in yahoo store
Been looking at the Vizio P Series. Would love to have a Plex client to go with it :)

Me too! This is the only thing keeping me from using the built in Vizio smart tv features.

Me three! I think the opportunity to have a built-in app would be a game changer because it wouldn't require people to upgrade an external source to one that supports 4k once 4k content comes out. You could just stream it directly to the Vizio app. *drools*
I asked Vizio through their support chat system about it and they basically said "we have no information on the app." They did confirm it is in development, but couldn't give me an ETA.
Does CRASHPlayer support 4K playback?
Does CRASHPlayer support 4K playback?
I don't know (I don't have a Vizio atm). I'm assuming not yet, but I would think it wouldn't be hard. It would probably just mean adding the 4k resolution (and supported codecs) to the list of capable formats when it registers with the server.
This is based on a guess and a bit of hope, so take it FWIW.
So the developer of CRASHPlayer last posted in June, and it's now almost October and no updates on his Facebook site, so did this become abandonware -- never making it to the Yahoo Application Store?!
4K support would require HEVC H.265 support which not all hardware would have enough horsepower to support...

I think it never went to the yahoo store on purpose (because an "official" app was in the works). That seems to be why he made it open source and released it to everyone.
Yes, 4k would likely require H.265 support, but most content will either already be encoded that way, or possibly in another format the TV supports. For example, the new Vizio P series supports H.265 played from a USB drive. If it can direct play that from the PMS, then no horsepower is needed on either end. (Just a nice fat pipe for all those bits. :))
Vizio seems has delivered all other apps except Plex as per their announcement. Hopefully it will be available soon.

That's good to know. I didn't realize they had delivered all the other apps in the list already. That bodes well for the Plex app. I still wish they'd give some indication of delivery date...
Earlier I was told by Vizio support that the Plex app was under development and no time-frame for the release. I'm sure Vizio must be working with Plex developers. If someone from Plex developer community on here can provide us some approx availability time-frame, that will be cool.
HEVC/H.265 has other benefits for non-4K content and can reduce file sizes by 40% or more!
I bought a 70" P-Series and like the Netflix 4K, just wish there was more content... If an Apple Television comes out, this Vizio is getting returned... ;) Apple is later to the HEVC/H.265 party then I would have expected.
