For those who use the My Cloud or My Cloud Home. Have you guys experienced any issues when using plex? speed, unable to access outside of home etc. I’m looking through the forums and yes I see a few people with issues but i’m trying to see if this is a route I should take or not.
I am definitely interested in this as well. I have heard mixed reviews on it and nothing that would swing me one way or another to purchase it. Right now I am using a usb external hard drive, but I would like to switch to a nas like the My Cloud Home. I have been waiting for other people to mention their experience with it.
Do you have any other suggestions on the best way to store your videos and stream to Plex? I don’t necessarily want to keep my macbook running all the time.
I’m by no means an expert. But I do have a few suggestions on things I have actually tried.
First, if you can, run it off your main computer system using an external usb 3.0 drive, like a Firecuda (hybrid) or SSD drive. I don’t have any issues with playback (other than common volume woes) with this setup using Wifi. I would note that I am connected to my cable router (combo unit) through 1Gig Ethernet. The server doesn’t even effect my day to day work on the system or gameplay even when streaming to a few devices.
Second, I tested out setting up an old computer to serve as…well…a server through Ethernet. Same setup, external drive hooked up to USB 3.0. Worked great, but my old case was huge, so I am buying a refurbished business computer. You can research the processors in these machines to make sure they fit your streaming needs. The systems are cheap, come with an operating system, keyboard and mouse (but usually lack a monitor) and work great as a Plex server IMO. This is a cheap way to go.
Shoot for an I3 or I5 processor and at least 2GB of ram, 4 GB is better. You need USB 3.0, 1GB Ethernet is a good idea. The graphics really makes little difference, Intel integrated is generally good enough. You can find decent refurbished builds around 100 to 200 dollars.
Ah, there you go. If you hadn’t gone that route I was going to suggest the Nvidia Shield next. I haven’t tried it myself, but it seems quite a few folks sing it’s praises as a Plex server.
