Where to buy movies from

Hi
Apologies if this is a stupid question but I am not very IT literate and trying to learn this stuff.
Where is the best site to purchase and download movies from? I see you can buy them from Amazon but seem to be at a high price and not sure if it means you can only watch them in Amazon. All I find when googling is links to dodgy looking free download sites. I want all my movies saved on a hard-drive to use with Plex but some of my DVDs wont rip so will have to buy them again.
Thanks

Buying the DVD or BluRay is the most sound approach. You can then rip the contents to files that can be transferred to your libraries. You can also ‘rent’ these items and sometimes they’ll ‘accidentally’ fall into the drive and be processed before you even know what’s happening. I’m not sure exactly how to counteract that ‘bug’ in many systems.

Buying digital copies means they have DRM and are unusable for Plex (unless leaping through flaming hoops is something you enjoy) - viewable only through the entity you purchased them from.

There are many ways to obtain DRM free files for use in Plex, but we needn’t discuss that here as it should be rather obvious to be honest.

And discussing any means to obtain movies other than ripping your own media is not only against the forum rules and Plex TOS, but is also illegal.

Where I live discussion is not illegal What kind of oppressive regime imposes such censorship in your country?

The regime is known as Hollywood.
They have the power to get such legislation passed.

However, it is not illegal in the US to rip or copy DVDs but it is illegal to circumvent DRM.

In the Plex forum there is no law preventing discussion of such things. It is just a Plex policy and therefore in the Plex TOS.

Pretty sure discussion is not illegal. The act of downloading is, but talking about it alone cannot net you anything. It is against Plex terms of service though.

Act of downloading is NOT illegal. (Nor is discussion)
The law is you cannot circumvent or remove DRM. That’s it ONLY per DMCA

The Fair Use Act allows you to make any copies you want for archival purposes as long as you do not remove DRM per DMCA.

Distributing them is violation of copy right laws.

This is in the US only as far as I know.

In this forum Plex prohibits discussing it.

(Actually a pretty stupid rule if you ask me)

Oh BTW to answer your original Post “Where to Buy Movies From?”
lol
Anywhere DVDs are sold

I get all mine from 7-11 - right next to the Giant Snickers Bars and stale, artificially flavored Colon Cancer Popcorn.

Before I became mobility limited I watched the bargain bins in virtually every store in the area that sold DVDs. I would visit them every couple of weeks. I was a very rare trip I did not find a gem or four that got into the bins by mistake or just because that DVD did not sell in that store.

As example one day I found the entire “Thin Man” collection for $8.95 and in the same bin a pristine copy of “Casablanca” for $1.95.

I already had some of “The Thin Man” movies, but not all, and my copy of “Casablanca” was a VHS copy so that trip was a good one but not that unusual.

The bargain bins are an excellent source of media at a fairly low price.

Of course that does not even take into account all those copies of “Swimsuit Cheerleaders of Norway” and “Zombie Coeds Part 4.” What treasures!!! >:)

Correct but it was Les Nessman played by Richard Sanders that really stole that scene. His reporting of the “Turkey flop” was just priceless for me. “It was like the turkeys mounted a counterattack.”
=)) =))

@Elijah_Baley
Yup
That was one of the funniest episodes.
LOL

Thanks for all your answers. I bought most of my DVDs from the bargain bins of Blockbuster though I’ve no idea where to find such a store nowadays. Do they even exist still? I have found that some of them just wont rip though. Matrix for example only rips half the movie and Blu rays are very hit and miss about whether they work at all.
Its a shame that there is such a great system for cataloguing and watching movies but no easy way to purchase them! Perhaps Plex could set up a store to sell movies with DRM that only allows you to play it with your Plex log in

Walmart. There’s one near you with round cardboard ‘dumpsters’ running over with 2 dollar DVDs. When they need the space you can buy one, get two free. If you live near @Elijah_Baley or myself wear latex gloves 'cause you don’t know where we’ve been.

It’s a rare case that I can’t get a disc to submit to my will, but in that case I inspect the working surface of the disc for gouges. If found I use a bit of white toothpaste rubbed in with kinda light circular motions for a time long enough to sufficiently ‘polish’ the scratch (or remove enough snot) for ripping to proceed.

If no joy they make great coasters.

FamilyVideo (dot) com. Especially if you’re looking for Blu-rays for newer movies at a pretty hefty discount. Granted, that discount is because they’re used rental copies, but frankly, I’ve still yet to encounter a used Blu-ray from anywhere that doesn’t play flawlessly. Hurting a Blu-ray takes a lot of effort. I use FamilyVideo to get new movies cheaply.

They seem to be a bit slippery for that function here at the trailer park. Of course the trailer shaking in the wind kind of exacerbates the problem.

But, mostly, the “Good Ol’ Boys” around here never set their beers down until it is finished. Then the can gets tossed, sometimes crushed by the forehead, into the corner where the overflowing trashcan resides.

True enough, but I always put a layer of Blue Masking Tape on the slippery side. We’re ‘evolved’ here in this county and have one of those Ronco Can Crushers screwed into the wall above the overflowing (and fruit fly infested) Brute. Less trips to the recycling facility leaves more time for ‘the high life’.

Why do you want to buy them? Just subscribe to one or some streaming services like Netflix, Mubi, Filmstruck, HBO, Amazon Prime Video (free for Prime users), Hulu, etc.

Otherwise, if you’re a cinephile, I suppose the best option is to buy blu-rays/dvds on Criterion. I think Amazon would be a good option too. I really don’t know, since I don’t buy films anymore.

Another option is Kaleidescape, it’s a media server where you can buy 4K films, but it’s really expensive.

Yea, we were ‘tip-toeing’ around that method waiting
for someone like you to show up.
