I have many MKV files, and many of them work great using the Plex app in Windows Media Center. However, some of them will have no sound and move frame-by-frame. When I fire up the same movie using the Web App, it works fine. I can only imagine it has something to do with transcoding, but again, many of my MKV files work perfectly fine. Why would some work and others not?
MKV can contain a wide range of codecs. Some of them are compatible with WMC, some of them not quite.
You might want to compare the Plex XML info of files which work with some which do not.
But seriously, why would you use WMC to play content from your Plex server?
There 3 “real” Plex clients available on Windows which can do that better.
Thanks for the information, @OttoKerner The reason I am using WMC is because I currently use that for all my TV watching, and because I am using a WMC Remote, it just easier to scroll up to the Plex button in WMC and enter in that way. This is going to sound incredibly lazy on my part, but dare I say it saves me from getting up from the couch and grabbing my Logitech K400? haha Wow, that sounded incredibly bad.
But yeah, that is why I use it. What three clients are you referring to? I’d love to check them out? I obviously have the Plex server on the computer running I can always jump into with my keyboard. But I am not sure of the other options. Thanks so much!
The Plex web app (which is bundled with the server) is not very well suited to HTPC use.
Especially because it doesn’t have support for remote controls and sound ‘bitstreaming’.
Plus, it requires far too much transcoding on the server, which is both bad for the quality and hard on the server’s cpu. After all, it runs in a web browser, so its playback abilities are limited to what the web browser supports.
Thank you very much! I’ll check these out.
