Wild Kratts and Word Girl episode information a mess

I’ve been recording all of the episodes of the Wild Kratts from my local PBS station. Many if not most of the episodes have incorrect information. It seems there isn’t an accurate source for episode info. (The TVDB forums have some arguments about what is correct, and Wikipedia’s information doesn’t match what is recorded either. PBS no longer has episode information on their web site.)

How can I get Plex to use the original program guide information and NOT overwrite that information from any online source such as thetvdb or imdb?

Disable ‘Enhanced Guide’ in the ‘DVR settings’ under
Settings - Server - Manage - Live TV & DVR

Create a new, separate ‘tv shows’-type library for your DVR recordings
(This is necessary, because the change we are about to make can easily create havoc with your existing files)
On the ‘Advanced’ tab of this library, set the Agent to ‘Personal Media Shows’

Now edit your existing recording jobs and set the target library to our newly created tv shows library.
These recordings will only have metadata from the EPG.

(If you move your already recorded files over from the other library, they may lose their metadata, so you better refrain from doing that)

Awesome response!

It looks like I can set the show itself to “Persona Media Shows” under “fix match”. Will that have the same effect as your solution for newly recorded shows?

This right here scares me.

It may have the effect that you lose all metadata on the already-recorded episodes. Unless you convert them into mp4 format and embed the episode titles at least.

That’s why I recommend to create a new library, where there are no media (yet) which can be messed up.

That’s fine. Episode information is so screwed up I plan to delete everything I’ve recorded so far except for one episode that has correct information, do the Plex dance, and change the match for the show to Personal Media Shows for the show and let them re-record.

The you can try to Fix Match and set the agent to ‘Personal Media Shows’, yes.

Not necessary. Fix Match will have the same outcome.

Might it be useful to edit programs as they are recorded and lock the fields as well?

Thanks for your advice.

That’s a lot of work.
You might as well

  1. look up the episode on TheTVDB and then
  2. rename it with the season and episode numbers which are used over there and then
  3. move this file into your regular tv show library, where all the metadata are automatically downloaded – based on these numbers.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. After the show is recorded, edit it and simply click on the “locks” to lock in the EPG provided info. I’m thinking that would protect against the information getting overwritten by someone accedently changing the fix match settings at a later date. Click on the pencil, click on the locks. Quick and easy.

It would be nice if Plex would have an option during recording to use the EPG data vs. TVDB and lock that data.

I’ve recorded all episodes of “Word Girl” for my Granddaughter. I’ve discovered that TVDB’s data doesn’t follow how PBS broadcasts the show AT ALL. PBS considers each half hour of two 15 minute stories an episode. TVDB treats each story an episode. So everything is wrong. Wikipedia lists them correctly, so I’m cutting an pasting for each episode. What a pain.

Please read again above. I recommended you to create a library which doesn’t use TheTVDB.

Yup, setting that up now. Too bad I figured this out after recording these shows for over a year.

Will I need to delete the shows out of the original library to get them to rerecord?

That is a very good question. I think you’ll have to allow recording “duplicates” to get them to re-record.

:astonished: is “allow duplicates” a setting somewhere in a newer version than I’m running? That would be a suitable workaround for epg snafu’s that prevent legitimate episodes from recording.

What I meant was ‘New and Repeat airings’, not ‘New airings only’.

If you are recording them from now on into a new library, the original files in the old library can remain (so you can watch them from there while the new library builds up)

The DVR only thinks an episode is a duplicate if it already exists in the library it is recording to, so a new library wont have any of the episodes in it (other libraries are not checked)

Actually, it doesn’t work like that at all. Episodes are recording into the new library’s folder, but appear in the old library in Plex as a duplicate episode. If you look at info it shows two files, one in each folder.

AND it is using the program info from the previous recording.

Do you have multiple locations set for your library (old & new)?

I have 2 tv libraries, one for my rips and one for dvr recordings
I can have the same item in both but they do not show as duplicate, each library is totally independant
dvr’d content does not care whats in my ripped library, it only looks at dvr’d library

if your library has both folders setup for it, then yes it will show as duplicate and use metadata from previous entry
