Request: TV-Series Multiple Episodes Feature

Hello,

since I'm managing a lot of TV-Series of all kinds in my Library, I noticed it is possible to include episodes consisting of two or more sepperate episodes.

For the moment Plex handles thes Episodes (e.g.: "Series - S01E01E02") as two seperate episodes howing up in the library.

I consider this actually very inconvenient, since both library entries play the same mediafile, therefore starting the video always from the beginning.

There would be two possible solutions from my point of view to increase the convenience regarding those episodes:

1) The probably easier, or (at least) more simple solution:

  • Integrating the option to set an individual startpoint within the videos timeframe, alowing the user to view e.g. episode 2 from within Episode 1&2 joined together.

2) Integration multiple episodes into one library entrie, listing the Media-Information (Description, Posters, Banners, etc.) beneath each others

Another solution, maybe the most sophiscated one, would be to merge solution 1 and 2 to one solution, showing only one library entry and the option to set one additional startpoint for each episode of the jouned media file.

With best regards,

RaEyE

PS.: I know there are a lot of episodes including 2 or more episodes of e series with seamless transition between episodes, but there are also those where this isn't given.

Not sure if either of these solutions are the way to go and I don't have any other suggestions but I get RaEyE's thinking

I know these ideas could be troublesome to implement, at least showing the information regarding multiple episodes within a page supposed to contain information about one episode.

Same about control instruments for starting / playing the media.

One possibility would be to design a generic page that piles control instruments and media information each in a scrollbox.

Just my thoughts... maybe a bit much, but well maybe :)

I don't mind the double entries for multiple episodes and don't need the startpoint option, I would just stop watching between those two episodes and can resume it later.

What I would love is the watched status being shared for those multiple episodes. When you have for example episode 1 and 2 of an series as one file, you'll get episode 1 on your 'On Deck'. When you watched the double episode, episode 1 will be watched in Plex, but episode 2 will still remain unwatched. So your 'On Deck' is kind of broken...

I just mentioned this feature request under the Mac PMS section. I'm not sure I need something as extensive as being able to separate the play of the file within Plex but I would like to see something along the lines of @Bart274 mentioned or to have the ability to merge the two episodes in an "intelligent" way.

I am constantly running into double episodes I forget I uploaded and although it's not that big of a deal, it would be nice to know I'm about to start the same episode I just watched. I guess this is mostly a complaint / feature request for the "Plex Friends" I share my media with. For the friends who don't really understand Plex, they constantly question that I have posted the same episode twice. I just wish there was some way, any way, to signify a double episode within Plex, without manually editing the episode description in hopes the "Friend" reads it.

The idea of Bart274 regarding a shared status would probably be the most convenient way to solve this, well I wouln't call it a problem, but a small inconvinience. Another feature I'd like to see, would be a small highlighter within the Plex WebApp or HomeTheater, in generall any other Plex-Player, to signal to the user, "those to episodes are linked / merged", so when you have a look at your library it should be possible to immediatly spot episodes which are actually represented by one file and will therefore be handled as one file.

Together with the combined / synced status of those episodes it should be a convenient and simple solution.

+1 this is really useful.

Hey my dear friend. I Know that :) I have like it, but I also want to make a comment. :)

My bad, I didn't see you already liked it. Sorry.

@adamskoog has started a page basically describing a similar issue we all experience we double episodes.

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/129456-feature-request-watched-state-for-single-filemultiple-episodes/

I have mentioned this page in his as well so we can all work together to get a clear idea described and, hopefully, implemented through the feature request page.

I believe this is an issue we all run into at one point or another when trying to manage TV episodes. Yes, manually splitting the episodes is a solution, but one that takes time and, frankly, no one really wants to do if a better solution is created.

Merging or Linking the two episodes within Plex could be one solution if implemented correctly. Not a standard "merge" that we are used to but a "Smart Merge" that allows us to recognize the double episode, view episode information about each episode, while also having the ability to manually separate them if this new feature is favorited by some.

Second idea would be a Linking system that still shows both episodes separately within Plex, but when one episode is highlighted, both episodes show as selected. That way it highlights the selection of two episodes at once (a double episode) and will also force the same watch progress on each. When the two episodes are selected, the summary screen would now display information for both episodes, etc.

Actually, a thread was opened much earlier than the one posted above and has more votes:

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/103544-multiple-episodes-in-single-file-and-watched-status/

It’s so frustrating that this hasn’t been addressed in any meaningful way. “You can manually fix the watched status” is the equivalent of “Go away you pesky user. We don’t want to fix this obvious usability issue”.

I just poked around in the database and the ‘media_parts’ table contains the information about multiple episode entries linked to the same physical file, it would simple to do a check for other episode index entries that point to the same physical file as the one whose resume point/watched status is being updated and update all index items simultaneously.

That way, when you finish watching the item indexed as Episode 1 from the physical file Show.S01E01-E02 then the item indexed as Episode 2 which also points to the physical file Show.S01E01-E02 would get marked as watched at the same time. This would mean the On-Deck would reflect the item indexed as Episode 3 which points to the physical file Show.S01E03 as the next episode to watch… You know, like how everyone would expect the system to behave.

If I stop watching at 24min35sec into the double episode then resuming Episode 1 or Episode 2 would take me to the 24min35sec point in the physical file Show.S01E01-E02, again, exactly as anyone would expect.

So easy to say… but after years and years of user requests so hard to get PLEX to do…

A request for the same feature exists already, and it has more votes.

Therefore this one is closed.
Votes are given back to the users who voted on this request. Please think of re-voting in the other thread if you still want it.
