This is a huge huge request for plex developers, please add STRM support back into Plex.
People with huge libraries using gdrive as a source would love this feature.
Emby allready added this feature and its starting to get a lot of attention since it did, because there are scripts that just passthrough the STRM to the client, thus getting rid of transcoding, wasting precious resources, and everything gets direct played.
Hope Plex developers see this and give it a try.
Would love to see this supported as well.
Plex definitely needs to add support for this back in!
Why was this feature ever removed? lol
Heck - been playing with another media server and STRM support… it is the way forward!
Would love to have this back in and supported by Plex, as Plex is awesome!
This would be a great addition to Plex, hopefully it would be somewhat easy to implement.
What the heck is STRM?
I searched the internet for it and receive 4 good hits and a bunch more that seemed irrelevant. The good hits were:
STRM Stream (US Postal service standard street suffix)
STRM System Trouble Report Menu
STRM Security Threat Response Manager (software)
STRM Starmedia Network, Inc. (stock symbol)
I doubt any of those need to be added to Plex.
This kind of problem seems to crop up a lot when people use acronyms without first including what they stand for.
Support for this is needed, I hope they add it back!
Please Plex support this. Tired of other useless features, no offense. Get back to the roots

https://kodi.wiki/view/internet_video_and_audio_streams#The_.STRM_file_method:
here so you get an idea about it, kodi uses this for a loooong time, and emby just added it, while plex removed it…
with this you can play absolutely any movie link directly, no more transcoding, no bandwith consumed, nothing.
anyone can host their server on a rpi and stop paying hundred of $$$ each month per bandwith and server costs since every stream will be directly passed through the client
i wont mind for a second paying plex pass only for this feature, cause this is godlike
+1 for strm support for Plex. Emby has it
This should probably get moved to Feature Requests.

strm support is one thing but how do we auto create strm links from google drive? I can’t find anyone who can achieve this.
I know some Kodi addons can manually get them but I need a scheduled or automatic method for newly arriving content.

This is what I use
https://github.com/ddurdle/Python-GoogleDrive-VideoStream
Thanks for the link. I happened upon that method a few days back and have it running. It works well but…
My issue is I like using the Ddurdle kodi addon as I can choose from googles pre transcoded video if needed.
I was using this python script for getting the strm links generated. It’s simple and does a geat job of creating ddurdle addon friendly srtm links.
github.com/makkonen/get-google-drive-streams
Unfortunately for some reason I discovered it didn’t create (misses out) the odd strm file and can’t figure out why so have had to abandon that method. The original creator is no longer frequenting the gdrive forum. I asked at the python script forum also but got no help there.
The script you mentioned works differently as in it creates http links for htlm5 players if I recall and outputs multiple strm files for each item, if you want to be able to chose quality. This makes the the folders look confusing and slows the updating in emby.
Seeing as Plex doesn’t support strm my favourite method is the makkonen script to scrape and get emby to pass the srtm link to ddrudles gdrive addon. I really like this solution but like I said the script isn’t quite 100%.
Make plex great again. Turn back strm
Any news about this?
I am really surprised that plex doesn’t allow to use strm files
Still not?..
I will use plex when they implemented again
I have some Radio Internet stations that it would be great to use in Plex and it would be really easy to use strm
