I also just made a DIY parabolic antenna that I put my chromecast through on the back of my TV. I'm lucky that the rear of my TV generally faces the location where the router is. My signal strength basically got 5-10x stronger. I made it by curving a cut-out from a pizza box and lining it with tinfoil. I cut a slit for the Chromecast to fit through and then slid it over the Chromecast. I'll probably try the newest PMS with this setup again later.

It's quite obvious....

I Got the same issue as Calenatar. my NAS streams my media at 20MBPS on all of my devices and computers, however when it comes to chromecast, it can't even stream on the minimum settings... It even streams fine on highest quality when im at a friends house...

I have tried almost everything I can listed in this thread.

No matter what I do, I still studder on Chromecast. Below is a excerpt from my Log File, It shows speed is greater than 1. Also, when i check activity, it shows Transcoding only the audio, the Video is Direct Play.

I've attempted AES off, Open Network, Moving the video file off my nas and on to my local machine, playing chromecast 1ft away from my router (ASUS RT-AC66U running latest Beta Merlin Firmware)

I'm at a complete loss as what to try next. I am fairly certain its the AC3 audio causing my studdering issues (as noted by the fact that the video is direct play)

Any help would be appreciated.

Figure I'd mention I don't really have many streaming problems. I bought my Chromecast around December of last year during that really good Costco sale. I have my Chromecast hanging off that cable that they provide, off the side of my TV. The wireless router is upstairs... if I were to draw a line from the wireless router to the dongle... it would go down through the floor... through the TV... and then to the wireless dongle. I picked up a cheap ASUS RT-N10P single antenna Wireless N router off Newegg around Black Friday for $5 (after rebate). For that router, I've left settings mostly default for now, apart from the WPA2-AES encryption, though I'm planning on shoving Tomato into it when I get the time. I just threw on the PLEX Media server on my home PC upstairs, which has an i7-4770K and 16 gigs of RAM, which said PC is connected wired to the router. I have the PLEX Media server set to max encoding power.

I didn't bother turning off 5Ghz on my Chromecast either.

The only problems I've encountered so far are:

1.) I've had issues that crop up sometimes when I rewind 15 seconds: Specifically it will black screen and only play the audio. So far this only seems to crop up when I'm streaming Cowboy Bebop. It's a 1080p Blu-ray box rip (about 5GB per ~24 minute episode), encoded in h.264 in an mkv container, 5.1 AAC, and with ASS subtitles. So perhaps it's an issue of encoding not keeping up, since it was said earlier that Chromecast has to encode the mkv container and I imagine it has to encode ASS subtitles?

2.) I get audio desync issues occasionally, noticed it happened twice with a TV show that's encoded 720x404 (480p?), encoded in h.264 in an mp4 container with 2 channel AAC. Usually using my phone to reboot the Chromecast dongle solves this. Sidenote: EZTV released that encode. Not sure how they could call that encode HDTV, heh.

Otherwise, I'm having no real problems. Then again, I've only been trying this out for about 2-3 weeks now. Thought I'd post here in case my setup just working practically out of the box helps anyone.

I was able to resolve my buffering issues on my Chromecast by disabling the DLNA server option in my settings. While it was enabled many of my media files were completely unwatchable, particularly MKVs. I haven't had the time to watch through everything fully but at least 3 files that previously did not work now appear to stream perfectly.

This may be worth including in the OP.

I wasnt aware you could turn off 5ghz or where this setting even is on the chromecast does this help when i find it ?

I don't think it's my computer's ability to transcode fast enough. I have a slightly better setup than the OP. And I have no issue streaming to my Xbox One on local network.

My girlfriend is using Comcast so she has pretty decent internet bandwith.

Is the chromecast just not able to handle it? Is it her router? She's using a Linksy's E2500 (Default settings).

All my movies on my server are 720p I ripped and encoded from Blu-ray

I'm also having issues streaming to my phone while on LTE. Even the lowest video quality won't stream without stutter.

Can someone set me on the right track to trouble shoot? I'm out of town, but can remote into my computer to tweak things, check video quality settings, etc.

WHere is this dlna server option ?

Settings -> Server -> DLNA -> Uncheck 'Enable the DLNA Server'

I found it , apparently this worked, only other thing i changed was i made a setting go to make my cpu hurt but it never gets ututilzed jumps around for a second to 40% then goes down to 10 -15 consistant

Also i think i have my settings on 720 at 8 mbs 3 in a row options of all the same thing

It seems that the DLNA server setting was either not the culprit, or only a half measure. I've begun to notice things freezing and buffering again.

Completely out of options here. Willing to post logs and mediafile info if anyone is interested.

Just thought I'd post my experience in the main "Stuttering" thread now I've resolved my issues...

Long story short is that I fixed my constant stuttering (NOT Buffering) by making sure my files (mp4 h264 1080p AAC 5.1 ~5GB Blu-ray rips) had "Fast Start/Web Optimization" enabled - Thanks DrJohn!

I used mp4box to convert my files, and then refreshed in Plex...

Hope this helps someone else!

Late to respond, but my guess is your problem is your upload speed at home. Just because you have fast download speed to WATCH streaming video doesn't mean you can deliver the same quality. Most ISPs only give you a fraction of the upload speed compared to download.

I've been having the same issue recently, causing stuttering & playback issues across multiple files, even ones which I knew worked fine previously.

The solution which sorted it out for me, was to go into Settings -> System -> Player, and turn off Direct Stream and Direct Play.

This is probably repeated a million times… and I apologize. I am having the stuttering stopping issues as well. Basically I never had any problems until recently. I am not sure what changed. Netflix works fine, HBO works fine, youtube works fine. When casting Plex local video to chromecast is where the issues occur. Any new ideas on a fix? Also when some people are posting where to change the settings, are they referring to the settings on the Plex Media Server? Or the settings in the Plex App that you are using to cast to Chromecast?

I am experiencing the same thing as electricpoet41. Streaming is working fine on my android phone and on a laptop connected to the same WiFi as both of my chromecasts. Everything was working fine until maybe a week ago. Other streaming services is working as usual. This must be a Plex issue.

Wholey cow, I wrote a whole page, now nobody will read it, especially Plex’s sofware team… I think there is a 5 line cap for today’s online-reader. “OMG, I’m not reading all that! (20 lines))”.

I am still getting my feet wet with Plex, but am also having problems playing files around the 1GB range in the player through PS3. It might not be the size of the file, but maybe the Quality or pixels (eg 1080p vs 720p or 480p etc) Why PS3 for starters? There is no Plex on my Smart TV; Vizio and no downloads in Yahoo store which is what Vizio uses for apps which really blows. All this shaking hands and doing deals instead of giving the customer what she/he wants, which is access to the world of application distribution instead of a one and only one-app-store on some Brands.

So, why I like Plex so much: I can see a preview of the movies that are stored on my NAS! I see the thumbnail, click and watch! If it works that is… Okay, first off I know that NAS is usually slower, but before anyone chimes in on this problem viewing the movies with pauses and/or buffering… I don’t have issues when not using Plex! So why have it?

On my PC is the same problem, when viewing a movie around 1GB or larger, or any 1080p HD… I am having problems streaming via Plex; where problems is buffering and pauses. Even on a video I made that is only 3 minutes in length – pauses even still because of the quality. Even when I choose to lower the streaming quality on source 1080p files to a 480p, it’s not doing the trick and still has buffering issues. Lower quality options seems to not be doing what its intended design is for.

So I found out today that I can see any of my movies, any size, any quality, with no buffer/pause problem… BUT, yes a big but. NOT with the Plex player (I think that’s why it is right?). I have to use my TV’s built-in DLNA transcoder software. So I use the Media option on my smart TV, search the movie in the correct folder that way and then watch it like that. No buffer issues, IFF I don’t use Plex. Why that sucks? I like Plex’s interface GUI that gives me all the query options and thumbnails and click and play via pretty thumbnails.

So do I just keep my Android handy for browsing for movies on my Plex server for the pretty thumbnails and then search the title on my DLNA native transcoder on my TV? That defeats the whole purpose of the Plex GUI though. Otherwise it’s just a tool for keeping a list with thumbs. Really sucks right now and I bought the “Lifetime Pass” for 150 buckeroonies too Seems like a big waste. I got the Pass so I could add users so that way they could watch my movies from their homes; I have like 300 movies on my NAS.

Another suckage: Why isn’t anyone tapping into transcoding ripped DVD’s (the Video_TS folder / VOB files)?

Really cool idea that Plex has, but it seems to be deficient. Like I said, anyone chiming in about my movies being on a NAS (WD DL4100), don’t bother because I’ve stated that I can watch all these movies on my desktop (not using the Plex GUI though) and also via my Smart-TV’s native DLNA with no hangups at all and smooth streaming.

So the problem lies in Plex’s GUI which uses it’s own player and transcoding.

Software team: look into this because it makes Plex really just another good idea but lacking luster. Oh, by the way I am a software engineer and have been working on a similar software as Plex. When I discovered Plex a few weeks ago I was somewhat bummed out because Plex seemed to have beat me to the punch, but now that Iv’e been using Plex I feel safe. Too many issues with Plex so I feel confident in my venture; and I work alone too. And the user doesn’t have to search for a ton of thumbnails because it does all of that automatically through a database and it also populates all the important data such as actors, writers, directors, year title released, and summary. I thought Plex stole my thunder, but after working with Plex for a couple weeks now, maybe not.
