Whisper is an AI model from OpenAI that can be used to generate subtitles for videos. It’s support was also recently merged into FFmpeg. It would be great if the plex server could automatically generate subtitles for newly added content either in case other sources have no subtitles, or just in general as the default
cosidering just how poor the reliability or accuracy of the existing subtitle services are, i’d say this should be very very seriously considered. but how long has it been since we’ve actually seen ANY kind of new features at this point?
OpenSubtitles more often than not has exactly what’s needed (sometimes needing manual search sure), but I’d rather see Plex improve their subtitle searching rather than give an AI option, first. I do NOT want my media to be part of some AI training nonsense, and that’s an important part of this conversation, too.
whisper model from openAI can do this, they just need to harness it into Plex. They’re so lazy implementing new features…it’s really sad.
