The sound on certain video files (I assume EAC3) randomly stopped working on plex windows app. It was working fine just a day ago, so no clue what caused it to break….. Did some research and came upon this reddit thread which suggested downloading Dolby AC-3/AC-4 Installer from Major Geeks. I downloaded the files but was unable to install/run the .appx and got an error of “app package parse failed”.
Did some more digging and found out i needed to edit the registry at Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\AppXSvc
clicked the start entry and changed it to a 2 instead of its defualt of 3. I was then able to run DolbyLaboratories.DolbyDigitalPlusDecoderOEM_1.1.285.0_neutral_~rz1tebttyb220. The first file titled "DolbyLaboratories.DolbyAC4DecoderOEM_1.0.0.0_neutral~_rz1tebttyb220" was unable to install for w/e reason, but the problem now seems fixed.
How did this just randomly break though??? wtf. Posting here for anyone else that cant seem to run the app bundles.
Please fix this issue in the next plex windows release…
The ‘solution’ to install the codec doesn’t permanently fix the issue, it can come back after windows updates randomly… Plex needs to address this properly (either stop sending AC-3 audio to windows 11 devices, or perform detection and only send it if the client can ACTUALLY decode it.)
I thought the whole appeal of Plex was that these codec checks were all done for us? Wtf?
I did some digging, and found a Dolby AC-3 decoder installer for OEM’s. I fully expect Microslop to pull them from my system, or break it somehow on Dolby’s behalf after a Windows update hits. Plex should still address this problem with a more permanent solution. Transcode the audio to PCM or opus if you have to.
I had problems with 4k HEVC lagging with hardware decoding turned on with windows app (local play on all etc).
This libmpv-2.dll (v3) solved it, can run with hardware decode on now.
Weird I found a solution in E-AC3 codec for my problem but thank you for solving my 4k hevc playback with plex windows app
