I built my linux server (hardware & software) from the ground up having never done anything like that before. It has now been up and running for two years plus with very few issues not caused by me tinkering.
This guide is my bible:Build a Media Server
It’s a little out of date but the gaps are easily filled in with a bit of googling
I find it strange how everyone on this thread has mentioned / suggested Linux, but why not Windows Server OS?
I run Server 2012 R2 and it runs like a dream! Never gives me any grief at all. I run MS Updates manually approximately once a month to keep it updated and that’s that.
I’ve made a call and it will be:
- Intel Celeron G4900, 2x 3.10GHz, boxed (BX80684G4900)
- Supermicro X11SCH-LN4F retail (MBD-X11SCH-LN4F-O)
- 2x Samsung DIMM 16GB, DDR4-2666, CL19-19-19, ECC (M391A2K43BB1-CTD)
- Fantec SRC-2080X07, 2HE (1670) [8x 3.5" hot swap bays]
- Seasonic 400W, EPS12V, 2HE Server PSU (SS-400L2U)
- PNY XLR8 CS3030 M.2 NVMe SSD 250GB, M.2 (M280CS3030-250-RB)
- Kingston DataTraveler SE9 G2 16GB, USB-A 3.0 (DTSE9G2/16GB)
I will most likely use FreeNAS, installed at the USB key, hosting some lab VMs on the M.2 SSD and will migrate the 3x4 TB from my synology along with the 8TB HD from the USB enclosure to the Server, later I will add some IronWolf 12 TB. Most media I have is not subject to be transcoded with my most frequent used player. If CPU is the bottleneck it will be some i5 or i7.

Looking a bit weak to me.
I would get Western digital UltraStar drives through data center grade hard drives they’re meant for 24/7 hour operation error correction built in and they’re meant for the harshest environments way better than reds
Or read prose also UltraStar Western digital hard drivesyou can write 500 terabytes to the merely and they should still be good for up to five years with that much writing
It is. But I checked most of my media and it does not transcode much. Hardly anything other than the transcoding for offline stuff on the iPad.
If it is not enough I will put in an i5 or so
I would get Western digital UltraStar drives … way better than reds
I already have the WD Reds, so no way around them … might be replaced in the future.
yeah that’s a good idea I’m still using red’s to but everybody else I’ve been building Nas and stuff for and just for backup drives and their computers themselves than using the UltraStar work great
Just ordered some Hardware. Will share when it is good to go.
@manslayerms why would you prefer Ultrastar before Ironwolf?
