This is not about the timer between episodes. It’s about the stream stopping after 3 hours unless there’s user input. the main issue is the lack of admin control over the “pass out protection” feature. As an admin I want to determine what the time is or if the feature is even enabled.
The same can be said for the timer at the end of an episode, the server admin should have control over the amount of time or if there is even a timer.
All that is wanted is a way for the administrator to control these features on their server to their liking.
for the love of god why not just give us the option to disable the feature entirely. If its an option then users are fully aware when they select it that this is what will happen. EMBY has this as an option so why cant Plex?
I just want to hit play on season 1 episode 1 and let it play until it runs out of episodes.
For example: since this restriction has me about ready to leave plex entirely i have been using EMBY a lot lately and last sunday I pressed play on season 1 episode 1 of Doctor Who and its now thursday and its still going. I didnt have to hit repeat all as you suggest. I simply went right into the settings and disabled the “Are you still watching” setting. WHY CANT PLEX HAVE THIS? Why does plex find it necessary that because some of the users complained that this means ALL of the users want this feature FORCED on us?
OK well then I am sorry. After reading what you wrote you said first the thing about “pass out protection” then said the thing about the Roku using repeat all to bypass restrictions… then later you said “with what I’m describing above, if you wanted purely continuous mode, you’d just set repeat all and it would be seamless.” And i kinda took that as in order to bypass the “are you still watching” i would need to set everything to repeat all.
I misunderstood and sorry I have just been super frustrated. I dont know how this has been an issue for so long. My LG (client version 5.1.0 platform version 3.8.0) received an update a few months ago and this issue with “are you still watching” started then but seems that its been an issue for several years for other people.
Up until this point the continuous playback has been the one feature of plex that I loved the most and it got ripped away. Then I found out that Emby has it and so ive been using emby recently to avoid this new update. I dont want to switch. Emby does seem to have faster clients and a more snappy feel to it along with the are you still watching option so it worked out… but their additional user experience needs a LOT of work. Plex has way better user login processes and despite not being as fast as emby it remains the better program in my opinion… but i can continue to use it without being able to turn off the “Are you still watching” prompt so it will play forever. Im glad you guys are finally getting around to hopefully fixing this and I hope it doesnt take too long.
No, ‘take a deep breath’ is unacceptable. Don’t be a condescending jerk towards your users / customers!
This a breaking change, that makes PLEX useless for many users. You mentioned introducing this years ago on the old forums, and were shouted down (I recall some hogwash excuse about how every last item can’t have a setting!).
I’ve been a paying plexpass member for many years, I’ve introduced PLEX to many others (whom have gone on to buy plexpass), and this has me looking for another platform.
Hmm, you bring up a good point.
Is there a setting for “pass-out protection” in the forums? Sometimes I think we need a little of that.
When activated, it could sense keystroke velocity and cadence, background audio growling and muttering, and aggressive sentence structure. At critical levels (not user configurable), an oxygen mask will spring from hammerspace.
I’m just replying to this thread to add a voice that wants this feature. I guess it was a “bug” that auto play never stopped on the Samsung app. Unfortunately that “bug” was fixed with this latest update and Plex no longer works how I’ve been using it for nearly 8 years.
I watch TV to sleep and when the episodes stop, it wakes me up. It’s not a “feature” I can use anymore and will have to find something else if I can’t be given the option to run episodes endlessly.
I use both but I now really dislike Plex the company. The biggest issue with emby is subtitles, if they would fix that I’d be completely done with Plex. For now I use Plex for movies and emby for TV Shows.
Right now my biggest issue with Emby is asking me to sign up for the paid version everyone I start the first show after the app has just started. It also occasionally will ask again in between episodes which if you don’t push a button effectively pauses your playback. This happens once every so often though like maybe once a day. I’m working on their forums trying to get it removed. I’m never going to buy it if it shoves it down my throat. I also don’t need it. All of the features I need are in the free version. I dont need cloud saving or conversion of files.
Long time loyal PLEX user here. I also have recently paid full price for a PLEX PASS, and now my videos stop playing after I go to sleep.
Not a good feature, not everybody wants it, and it is lame to change something that has worked fine for so long, just make it a toggle, it isn’t hard to do that and we know it, why be so difficult?
And WTF is up with waiting 15 seconds between episodes? A simple option to toggle that on or off is the answer, not some workaround involving me making playlists everyday.
You guys are doing a great job of going backwards. I regret paying for the PLEX PASS now, word to anyone reading this who is considering paying, some of your most favorite features could be removed suddenly because PLEX knows what we want, not us… and if you are lucky, you may get a response a year later saying, “Hey, maybe we are gonna think about looking into this, lol, no promises on any actual effort or work being done but yea, thanks for your $119.” - Asking for reasonable features to be returned to the product/service you paid good money for shouldn’t feel like I may get lucky and have a favor done.
IMHO the autoplay issue and the queue time between episodes have the exact same problem and largely effect the exact same types of plex users and administrators.
I have been looking at setting up a clean account with a new NAS build and buying a lifetime pass for it despite having already spent roughly 500$ on plex over the years just for myself not including my parents server and have gotten half a dozen friends into managing their own servers with plex pass.
However, my wife and I watch Plex every night to sleep and between the short timeout and time between episodes the large pauses makes both of us anxious the playback has potentially stopped. Unless we just started shuffling a show it’s likely about to stop anyway so we reshuffle a series again before sleeping because it still makes way more sense than creating a terrible static playlist for every show you want to watch for longer than 2 hours at any given time…
It’s getting harder and harder to manage MY media with Plex and apparently the built-in database and structure isnt useful so we should setup gimped playlists as a “solution.” What a joke. I’ve been a Plex advocate for years but these two issues combined with the threads and responses on them over FOUR YEARS are seriously making me reevaluate my life choices.

Similar here.
I use Plex to cast music videos to the A/V system at a music venue. Oftentimes I’m nowhere near the iPad I use to control it so having the media go into a countdown timer after X number of videos is a huge issue.
Hopefully continuous playback without the countdown is added soon.
I just switched to Plex for music because Play Music is dead now and Plex music sucked 5 years ago. Now that I’m relying on Plex for everything the glaring issues due to forced “features” that basically rollback the service are becoming unacceptable.
Especially with a new NAS build on the way and 2000+ worth of storage and looking at getting a new lifetime pass because i cant get one on an account I've spent 550 on… We should get a discount just like new accounts if not more so
My coworker is trying to convince me to go emby even though client side it’s not quite there yet for not technical users.
Another bs response from a Plex team member though… “OH HOW LONG ARE YOUR VIDEOS?? YOU’RE OBVIOUSLY DOING SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR LIFESTYLE AND YOUR MEDIA.”
If you’re going to quote me, do it right. If you read the rest of this topic, you’ll see that it’s already been responded to by our fearless leader that an option will be coming to change this.
My “quote” was specifically related to the previous user’s comment about music videos. For videos shorter than 20 minutes, they shouldn’t be seeing this issue. If they are, that’s a bug that needs to be tracked down and fixed, regardless of any changes to this feature.
Hyperbole exists whether you agree with it or not. Just like we don’t believe after 4 years a vague response and telling customers to breathe and calm down is actually reassuring and equates to an impending resolution when the track record has proven otherwise. Things have been getting worse not better.
Clearly customers are frustrated from my limited research on specific topics.
You’re responsible as a respresentative of the brand, this thread and all of it’s comments are related and on the same topic with the same expected resolution. If you want to track down a bug related to music than go do it but the consensus of the thread is for two other issues. Dont invalidate and misdirect the rest of it. Just own it. It’s clear people have wanted a resolution to the two related issues (myself included) for years, how much more do we have to pay? I’ll pay it if it gets resolved, hell I’ll even start a gofundme to fix the 15s time between episodes and disabling the “passout protection.”
I don’t want this thread to auto close and disappear. Stopping shows after X time is something that had to be implemented. How hard is it to just add the option to disable that in the settings? I imagine it would take…at most… an hour.
Now that the Xbox App has the auto stop “feature” that everyone here is talking about, I am posting for the first time since buying my lifetime pass years again to say I greatly support giving users the ability to turn it off and play content forever if they choose. Thank you @elan for addressing this issue and I truly hope it comes quick as it is quite a bummer to have to deal with after years of freedom to play my media how I like. ( Although being able to set the auto off to like 12 hours would be nice as well.)
Same complaint. I want it to keep playing without intervention. I keep it running while I am working on other tasks. I don’t want to have to stop what I’m working on to hit ‘play’ again every couple hours. Make it 8 hours, and I could tolerate it. I still wouldn’t like it. My samsung TV worked perfectly until a recent update. Took me forever to figure out what was stopping it. Please FIX THIS. Either remove the nanny or let me control it. I don’t need supervision. I’m an adult.
