thanks, I’m looking forward to the update
Hello,
I am trying to figure out why all of a sudden I am getting playback issues with at least certain videos that are on the server.
I noticed it on my Roku’s 2 and 3. I would get most of the way thru a 25 minute or so video and it would say can’t find video check server or something to that matter.
I forget exactly the error but I have searched it on the forums and since tested the suspect videos on the Web app and Android and those videos failed those apps as well so I am suspecting the video format may be suspect. I have noticed they are PAL and I live in US which should be NTSC. I don’t think that should be a problem but what do I know.
My PMS 0.9.12.8, PC is a W7 64 Ultimate, i7-950 5TB of HDD 12GB RAM.
The format looks good to me mp4, h.264
Here is the info on the Media

See any problems with this?
Any suggestions would be very appreciated. I am re-encoding one video with Handbrake to see if that changes the outcome.
TIA!

I have just tried to play a movie and all is well unless i want subtitles. If i turn on subtitles, transcoding starts. Will there be some support for subtitles in metro app like on Roku for example (without transcoding)?
The latest Plex for Windows release does not force a transcode when displaying subtitles (it supports soft subtitles) when using the new HLS (Experimental) transcode format.
Will the Windows App ever support DTS, DTS-MA HD, or Dolby True HD? I just started using Plex and noticed that when using the Plex Windods App, video will direct play but any type of DTS or True HD audio are transcoded to AAC.

@Mulb: yes, that’s normal with Windows 10. There’s some work we’ll need to do on the server side to support Windows 10, since sync decision-making is done on the server.
Hello,
is there any update on that topic?
I’m waiting for this functionality before buying a new plex pass.
Indeed, it’s very frustrating to see my NAS working for hours to transcode a file that could be played directly on my W10 tablet. And I have to prepare my travels weeks in advance to transcode several episodes…
@D34DL1N3R The Windows app will support those codecs as soon as Windows supports them in their own player (since we use the OS component for playback). For anything which is not supported, we have to resort to transcoding.
@Mulb, there’s an internal issue logged to explore that. I am planning to take a look at that soon, but I can’t promise anything.
So, Plex for Windows app?
Does this mean that an MKV contained HEVC video stream should be playable without transcoding via the in-web-browser player that runs on the Server after the Server app in installed in Windows?
Or is this exclusive to the app that can be installed via the Windows Store (Win10)?
Neither is specifically called “Plex for Windows”.
Edit: HEVC MKVs absolutely do direct-play via the pay-to-use Windows Store app. Crappy UI though, horizontal scroll? I wouldn’t pay for that. Also getting out of Full-screen mode is ridiculously complex and frustrating to figure out!
The in-browser app definitely does not direct-play HEVC MKV’s, but transcodes okay on my Skylake, same as before.
So I guess I’ll hang on to my low res AVC/x264 backups.
Yes, this is specific to the app you download from the Windows Store (to which this forum section is dedicated).

BTW, I came here via direct link from a PLEX News e-mail I received and the News Page it linked to (for more info, for more info…). So there’s no reason to assume I’d have some innate knowledge of what this forum is dedicated to. Even the “PLEX for Windows” that shows at the top of this thread, as the forum section, is not specific.
PLEX has at least three different types of “PLEX for Windows” applications. This forum is apparently dedicated to the Metro app.
@rckoegel: totally agree, and you’re definitely not alone. I’ve finally managed to have the forum description changed, so it should be clearer from now on.

The day that happens (DTS) I will surely switch my allegiance to this client for my TV . I absolutely love the new interface.
Its really well thought out so congratulations to all the team for their efforts. Oh how I hope that PMP will look this good one day. ![]()
Thanks, glad that you like it @davehobson! How would you feel with remuxing with only audio transcoding to AAC 5.1?

Yep I would have no issues with that. My movie files are mainly 20-30GB MKV’s So as long as I don’t see a noticeable loss in picture quality I would love it.
Its pretty incredible that an app that is relatively new and not particularly optimized for large screens is far easier to navigate than a more mature app that is exclusively designed for larger screens. Maybe its the Harmony Smart Keyboard that helps ![]()
I will also add that although I have never really been a hater of the whole discover/browse thing… you seem to have the perfect implementation of it. Its unobtrusive for those who don’t care for it and easy to use for those who do.
Keep up the great work.

Ok just an update on this. I haven’t tested extensively due to long shifts.
But I don’t seem to suffer any buffering at all with the new version. DTS and DTS HD-MA do indeed just transcode the audio with little CPU impact on the server.
Sadly one thing I have found is that loading of media now seems to take ages 20+ seconds and even longer if resuming. PMP running on the same device loads much quicker.
Still love this app though so I’m gonna keep running windows on my NUC so I can keep up with developments rather than going back to embedded PMP.
Duplex Media Player in the Windows Store seems to be able to play most formats (see below) and according to the forum below, it will play dts. Not sure if it transcodes this or not, but I will try and test the free version for this. It would be interesting to see how this is accomplished and would potentially allow Plex for Windows 10 to not transcode and therefore reduce CPU usage.
Link that suggests support for dts:

Did it play dts for you?
As far as I know, some apps are able to do that depending on the developer’s country, since local laws might work against Dolby and not require the developer to pay back royalties.
