Handbrake settings to preserve DVD quality

Functionally, 854x480 are the dimensions for a 16:9 image on a widescreen TV and that is the proper final resolution.

If your OCD will allow that mis-reporting of the res by Plex as 576 you’re good to go. My OCD kicks in at that point requiring the use of Version 0.10.5. because as it stands right now HB hasn’t seen fit to fix the custom anamorphic section to allow the proper storage of DVD material at 720x480 so that Plex will correctly report as 480p.

If HB ever does fix the new Windows version I’ll use it and upgrade the guide at that point - I’ll be able to explore all it’s nooks and crannies at that time. The only real difference in the new version is that they broke Custom Anamorphic and added a bunch of ‘Custom Profiles’ - that you don’t need anyway, IMO. If you’re using My Guide you don’t need a Custom Profile and in fact, if you don’t use just the right Custom Profile you’ll create material that won’t direct play on anything - that was the point of creating the Guide in the first place.

Okay, thanks. So it is more of a personal preference concern. I’ll have to keep an eye out and see whether or not the videos I’ve made since 0.10.5 direct play or not, although none of my clients have complained.

If you’re using the Guide, or your own settings you’ve found creates material that direct plays you shouldn’t have any issues. If you use one of those crazy Custom Profiles HB thinks is so important anything could happen.

I re-encoded my entire DVD library (1000 movies or so) a couple of months ago using the latest version of Handbrake and they all direct play just fine on all my devices in my home.

To save on my data plan, everything is transcoded down to 720kbps to my phone.

Hey, has anyone exported and uploaded their settings based on this who would be willing to share?

I have Handbrake running inside a pre built docker, so may be forced to run a specific version (read, 1.1.1). I too would be interested in looking at someones settings if anyone is successfully using this version with the settings advised by @JuiceWSA earlier in the thread.

this seems to have the custom anamorphic settings. I am atm still trying to get heads and tails of all the settings.

ATM I ran as he stated but for used 2200 for kbps for an DVD tv show it cut 600 Megs off of a 1Gb file. IT looks good.

JuiceWSA It seems 1.1.1 may have fixed or added back anamorphic.

So I do want to cut my files down, but do have a lot of files to encode. If the settings are set for a faster encode it just makes a bigger file? I can deal with a bigger file, so long as the same settings do not effect the quality.

I am still trying to understand what is happening when we set the anamorphic settings. ATM I am working on stuff that is 4:3 720x480. So if I set it to 640x480 does it not crop off 80 pixels width lines? What about 16:9 at 720x480 when we set it to 854. Does this add black bars? I’m just not sure what is happening in this setting.

Can anyone answer, thanks for your time.

I have the same problem too! And i want to know whether there have some other formats that have the similar quality of the source DVD. Recently, i just found a freeware - Free HD Video Converter Factory which can convert videos. So, i want to know that whether i can convert my file to the formats with similar quality of a source DVD so as to solve my issue?

Why not use Make MKV?

Hello,

I came across this post when searching online for best handbrake settings to use with Plex. It seems that the link included in your post no longer exists…or is “private”.

Any chance you can send my way?

Thanks!

Just log in and it will work.

Doesn’t work for me either, and I am logged in, otherwise I couldn’t be posting here…

I am logged in and am also unable to access the guide.

@JuiceWSA, would you be willing to post again?

Maybe just something wrong with the URL in that link? It used to work. I remember I saved a copy of the DVD settings and the Blu-ray settings. I’ll see if I can find it. Might be a couple days til I have time, though. FYI, that user was suspended and won’t be responding anytime soon.

Or try this link and scroll down to post 12.
