Hey Chuck
In your original reply you mentioned the issue bring prioritized for early 2020.
Is there an update on the backlog status?
I noticed there is some work on improving NVIDIA hw acceleration. Any reason why AMD gets the cold shoulder?

As I stated,
We will see what we see⦠after January.
Appreciate it!
I had given up on AMD transcoding on linux as Windows just sucks in general for everything. I had been searching for a cheap nvidia card but havenāt wanted to fork out NZ$200 for a second hand 1060 6GB card for this as I have 8GB AMD cards lying around not being used and sure as hell donāt want to fork out MORE money for a 1070 for a 8GB model. I really hope there is more movement next year on the AMD transcoding in linux. Would much rather allocate the cash for an Nvidia card on more storage space!
Agree, even more stupid when AMD APUs come with perfectly good GPU HW that is even built in. Specifically the HP Microserver latest model, (which I would assume is the server of choice for many HTPC enthusiasts) comes with such an AMD APU.
Given the current dominance of AMD in the market and the excellent AMD GPU HW, itās high time Plex got moving.
Not to mention that VAAPI is the cross platform standard fully supported by mainstream distributions.
Same here, as I see Nvidiaās second hand cards little overpriced, seems not logic to spend 3x money for an nvidia card vs an amd card that can do more or less same work.
Hi,
Has there been any updates on this post January? Am keen to have hw transcode on the linux side of things!
Hello,
Do we have any news regarding the Transcoding package update on linux?
As we really want to use AMD Gpu on our builds. Especially when we are using them for home use and they are cheaper than others.
I have no information at this time.
I have this thread bookmarked and will report here when I do have information
I would love to see a status update on this one. I will even volunteer for testing on my arch machine.
Weāre all waiting for Engineering to commit to providing it.
So far, they have not given any indication of doing so. (but thatās also common with them)
Any news Chuck?
None.
Best to stop watching the pot waiting for it to boil. You know how that goes.
Iād like to put in a +1 for this. Given how things have turned in the CPU world in the last year it hardly makes sense to buy an Intel CPU right now and I would sure love to use the AMD hardware that I purchased with Plex. Thanks
With new AMD APUs on the way with 8 cores and vega graphics, and hw assisted encode / decode in the silicon, they could make for excellent Plex servers.
I bought a HP Gen 10 Microserver with 6 APU units on Opteron Processor, ready to āplayā and use PLEX with encoding support. Really, an awesome device. The last thing that I need working to be āperfectā is the PLEX using its inner GPU power to allow more than 2 streams at same time (CPU only be able to keep 2 streams at same time).
Iām waiting this feature a lot.
Looking to do a new build and still waiting to see if Plex will ever give AMD some love. Iād really love to build a nice little silent ryzen APU based server, but itād be artificially hamstrung by Plex refusing to support it.
Is there a way to vote with money to make this happen? I might be convinced to contribute to a crowdfunded campaign to support AMD GPUs on the linux
Those new 4000 series APUās would make sexy plex servers if only they did hw assist well. Apparently the visual quality might not be adequate even if plex were to support it. Youtube has examples (mostly game streaming) of people comparing the intel vs nvidia vs amd, and amd still doesnāt seem to be where they need to be.
I am really hoping this is addressed before I need to buy my next plex server as AMD seems to have everything else done right.

You have Plex Pass and want to give more money for something that people have been asking for a long time and itās already on other platforms? Donāt get it.
