I have had it with the Vizio SmartTV app, looking for a complete and easy replacement.

Nothing wrong with Google devices, they’re just not sold on Amazon.

I still recommend the Nvidia ShieldTV running AndroidTV to anyone serious about Plex.

I am still thinking about it however we have Prime and would like to get some use out of Prime Video in our living room.

Well as far as I’m aware Amazon Prime is available on the shield.

An old link but probably still relevant unless anyone can so otherwise.
I have never used a Shield cos I have a dedicated HTPC purely for Plex Media Player, but i do know that the Shield will future proof you if you go high end and you get into 4K, HEVC etc…

EDIT NVIDIA SHIELD TV 4K HDR So despite the **** for tat nonsense between Google & Amazon you should still be golden.

Yup, Amazon Prime is on it. It’s a Nvidia deal, not a Google deal, as it’s not on the Nexus player.

It also supports Kodi (and Android specific fork SPMC) perfectly, Rokus don’t do.

Unfortunately I need Amazon Prime Canada support, and would prefer not to do the region fiddling to make that work, it appears the Apple TV is the only one of the three that officially supports Prime Canada content.

I have Amazon Prime Canada just by switching the language to English us a while back… All Canadian content and apps still work… But feel free to spend on any other not-as-capable box if you wish to.

No need to be backhanded at the end of your comment.

I have actually read through a few threads on the nVideo forums that lead me to believe there was more that had to be changed or switch back and forth to work… At the end of the day I want a GREAT Plex and Netflix client AND Amazon Prime without fussing.

You’re right, I was actually coming back to take it out. I’m sorry.

Reality is, the AppleTV is a nice device, but for roughly the same money you’d be getting a MUCH better Plex device with the Shield (supports vc1, HD audio, better remote, private listening with headphones, etc) while Amazon Prime Canada and Netflix work perfectly.

And to add to what @KarlDag mentioned, mpeg2 support with deinterlacing.

Currently giving the Apple TV 4K a shot so far it is working as expected… pleasant surprise the HDMI CEC support out of the box allows for more than just volume and power. The arrow and exit keys map on the TVs native remote out of the box so one remote to rule them all is possible.

So far nearly all content direct streams accept for some oddballs.

Amazon Prime Canada works out of the box, without any messing around…

Need to put it through its paces for a few days to make a final judgment but so far it seems to be at least as capable and reliable as the iOS client…

Odd timing wise the Vizio Smart TV client got a bunch of updates lately that seemed to help its reliability but the menu SPEED on the ATV 4K is amazing, I haven’t seen any poster art delays or really any sort of delay in menus. I have had one or two slow to load videos however.

Funny you should revive this thread, I bought a Vizio tv with smartcast last week, and I’ve been impressed with the built-in app. I hate the UI (same and PlayStation and other platforms) but it’s worked pretty reliably for me so far.

Not on the same level as my ShieldTV of course, but If I had to use it I wouldn’t be pissed or disappointed.

I have been using the Visio app almost since its release and have noticed a number of issues / re-occurring issues in that time… It works fairly well but there are a few key reasons I wanted a different player. I also have two different generations of Visio TV and both have these issues.

  • No offline support of any kind, iOS/Android based apps have cached options and don’t stop working the instant the internet is down.
  • the app also doesn’t work or is slow to load if Plex services are down / having issues since the app it self depends on online Plex services
  • VERY VERY poor direct play/stream support (probably improved on newer TVs) but in general I had to disable direct play most of the time because of the built in player having aspect ratio issues or other playback problems. This puts a lot of load on the server to trans-code.
  • slow or failure to load poster art, particularly when browsing movies
  • frequent failure to resume playback when paused
  • recently, failure to correctly identify the server as local/nearby instead of remote, which really screws up playback quality
  • general buffering issues

Have cut the cord in our house and also make use of Netflix and now Amazon Prime Video. I generally don’t have any of the above issues on our iOS devices so the Apple TV made a lot of sense once it got to its current generation… I was strongly considering the Shield TV but it is more gaming focused and actually a fair bit more expensive than the Apple TV 4K.
