[INFO] Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k

I have noticed a massive improvement with the shield tube. What I did was enable “match audio content resolution” under advanced sound settings so now the nvidia shield offloads high bit rate audio processing to my denon AVR. This appears to have resolved my issue, watched 2 movies so far that would previously have cause the shield to freeze and crash Plex or stutter playback.

Could share the exact codec details of a file that works for you this way?

I also got a atv 4k 2021 but it refuse to direct play any 4k content I own.

he is using a 4k with EAC3 audio (not HD audio), that is why it works.

HD audio, or HD audio+subtitles is the primary cause of 4k transcoding.

if you are trying to use the tv for plex, then you should switch the audio stream to ac3/eac3 (ie dolby digital or stereo). Or remove the truehd audio from the file.

You will not get HD audio through your tv.

As per the first post, the only real options for HD audio are nvidia shield or xbox one.

Thanks for this tip. I wasn’t really sure what that option did, and it seemed like it might have more to do with high resolution music services like Tidal from what I was reading online. I’m currently having an issue with a new soundbar system that I purchased (Samsung Q900a). I have my Shield Pro 2019 connected to it and then it goes to the TV via HDMI ARC. The issue I am specifically seeing is with playing 4K files with the full Dolby Atmos TrueHD soundtrack, and there are video stutters from time to time during loud frenetic scenes, and then the audio gets out of sync. This is with the beta version of the Android TV Plex app. I have to do more experimentation, but I didn’t experience the same thing while watching via the Plex add-on for Kodi on the Shield. Everything is direct playing and the bandwidth is staying relatively normal from what I can monitor. Shield Pro is hardwired, and I have new Monoprice UltraHD Certified cables. If anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated.
