Is the Xbox One Plex app abandoned?

Whenever the update rolls out for the XB1 player, I certainly hope that a “search” function has been added. Trying to go through several thousand movies in my collection on the Xbox is painful…

You still believe in an upcoming update?

I’m not holding my breath, but I hope so…

Hehehe. I feel like they enjoy trolling Xbox One users about updates. Just look at any Plex newsletter that talks about staying updated and take a gander at what they use as the accompanying graphic. lol.

Good point jmckee, but I understand seththetechy’s question, as the Xbox One client is one of the few apps that has yet to see the updated design. This hasn’t changed much since even the Xbox 360 days.

I can only speak anecdotally, but the app itself is pretty solid and works well (why fix something that isn’t broken?), but the lack of design updates is a bit disappointing.

Yes it plays video but skip ahead in a DVR recorded show is much slower than the plex app on my Shield. I find it painful to scrub through recorded tv shows as the xbox one app is so slow at doing it.

I have a feeling that is going to do more with the Shield is direct playing the file and the Xbox One is transcoding the file. This means that when you scrub ahead the Shield just requests the new time stamp when the Xbox One requests that new time stamp the server needs to move the transcode to the new spot before it can send the new spot. And if you’re doing multiple scrubs it needs t okeep restarting the transcode jobs as each little jump most likely won’t already be transcoded so the server will need to create that part.

So I haven’t checked that but I just assumed that the xbox one could direct play as well. Is there some setting to tell the xbox one to DP or are you saying the xb1 is not capable of it?

Considering that the Silicon Dust DVR app on xb1 doesn’t even have a transcoding engine and that it scrubs “instantly” through their recordings (same codecs, etc) then I’m quite certain the xb1 can handle the stream just fine. It’s just plex that may not be recognizing that.

No, there is no setting for that.

I brought it up internally for the developers to look at re-enabling support for directplay of the mpeg2video. The problem was that out of sample files pulled from the internet the Xbox One could only correctly play about 50% of them. The others either had out of sync issues or initial playback problems (IE at the start of playback instead of video the picture looked like a slide show skipping between frames). But unfortunately, that is something that will need to be looked at by the developers and then weighed on enabling direct play with the high possibility of failed playback vs automatically transcoding. The best option would be to get microsoft to look at the sample files and figure out why the decoder is choking on them, but there is absolutely no timeline on when that could be a possibility.

I wish it was more like the Samsung app where you can adjust audio and subtitle delay.

Any ETA on the update?
It’s August and still no word…
Is the Xbox client that hard to written code for?
I’m hoping it looks like the UWP windows 10 app and is faster in every way.
Xbox client is currently so slow in every way compared to other clients

The Developers don‘t comment on release dates, timetables, planned features or any other questions from the community.

Every new released feature including DVR

I hope an update is coming. We are all (patiently?) waiting. I love using Plex on my xbox one. However, the app is light years behind the Plex app on android, roku, apple etc etc. Please, for the love of God, give us the updated UI.

I really can not understand why they will not comment on this even if its to say Yep still supported. Some of us actually pay/paid for Plex Pass and basically get ignored, it feels very much we got robbed :frowning:

With the XO supported UWP and that there is very very little need for “Certification” with UWP apps (you only have to look at some of the crap on the Xbox store to see proof of this) then why not just rework some of the Windows 10 app’s code to support controllers and push that out and make that you base code bank from 2 systems, that way you have 2 systems being supported for half the work.

It’s unbelievably frustrating. I too wish we could get some sense of what’s going on, but I think the reality is simply that Xbox One and Win10 are pretty far down on the priority list. With the blog announcement about Live TV and DVR, it seems Plex made it really obvious that the priorities are Android and iOS at the very top. That’s completely understandable given the # of users on those platforms. Then, next in line is Roku, Fire TV, and Smart TVs. Why Smart TVs!? That’s the only one I can’t understand. Consoles should definitely be ahead of Smart TVs. But, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Plex must have some solid numbers about usage on all the different platforms to be making these priority decisions.

@Moussa @jmckee We all realize that Plex doesn’t share release dates, etc. But can you please share something with us besides “we’re working on it”?

And after this you can ask Tim Cook to tell you the Features for iOS 12.
Plex isn‘t a community project anymore. They aren‘t interested in working with the people on the forums, they want to make money (and I don‘t mean this in a negativ way; I want to be paid at the end of the month as well).

You do understand the difference between a completely new OS and feature parity right? We’re just asking for a sense of progress on the Xbox One app, not the complete roadmap for Plex overall. Completely different. Regardless, even money makers have tried to improve their communication to their users about upcoming features. Remember Microsoft announcing Xbox Scorpio more than a year ago? M$ did it, why can’t Plex? There shouldn’t be any reason that Plex couldn’t try to improve their communication with users too.

Sadly, I can’t share anything besides they are working on it. Without permission from Plex Inc the ninja’s can only share information that has already been released.
