Live TV/DVR Included With Plex Pass -- How is this not a scam?

Hogwash! Emby does this all just fine, even more if your watching ATSC 3.0 broadcasts it transcodes the AC-4 sound at the same time (beta version) (even on a Pi server). As for the thousands of little TS files that is Plex’s choice.

There so much wrong with what you have said. First, I have server class Windows computer. 2nd, it’s Plex’s choice to write all those ts files – other software doesn’t do that 3rd, the number of small files has got nothing to do with the lack of functionality that I complain about and finally, other software handles this stuff flawlessly.

Obviously, you’re happy with Plex for what you use it for. But we’re not being unreasonable when we expect a DVR to be a DVR. It should allow to record what you want when you want and should allow you to watch whatever you want when you want , even if it’s still recording. This has been expected behaviour for any DVR for 15 or 20 years now.

Live TV plays in the browser for wayyyyy longer than 3 minutes on my server. Perhaps you should turn off “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback” which caused that problem for most users.

Never had that setting and still had that problem for over two months just like lots of other people. I can read the threads too. And the problem happened for different tuners as well – HDHomeRun and WinTV QuadHD (PCIe). Problem was only just resolved for me yesterday with the 5409 server and the 4.72.1 PlexWeb. And it’s still happening for a lot of people.

I use a quadhd tuner and it doesn’t and hasn’t given me problems ever.

How is that relevant? It doesn’t change the fact that it was a widespread problem.

You said the quadhd pci card had problems and I’m telling you it has never gave me issues. If you had a problem use a different web browser.

Its already off on my server, doesn’t fix the issue, stream sometimes stops after 3 minutes with the “This Live TV session ended”.
Plex HTPC, same thing, it worked great and it suddently refuses to play live TV
It worked great 3 months ago

Tested on Jellyfin (FOSS) and it works flawless, so it’s more the software than the hardware

Geez, after 30 years as a senior systems/web developer, I never thought of that. Thanks so much.

If you have a quad pci card and I have a quad pci card and we are running the same versions of PMS and I haven’t had issues with it and you have then it’s something with your configuration.

There’s also the little trick of deleting the Codecs folder but I’m not getting into that with you. The Android app is trash and you all fail to grasp the concept of buying a cheap $40 Roku device that’s actually working because the Roku dev actually cares.

Or there’s a bug in plex that’s triggered on my system and not yours. There’s all kinds of possibilities. But again, it was a widespread problem for a lot of people that lasted for months. As I said, the problem is fixed for me as of yesterday. So I’m not really in need of help to fix it. Obviously this thread is not about fixing individual problems. It’s about the widespread problems that we endured with for years.

Yep, quite the Plex endorsement there. Get Plex because there’s one small subteam of developers that is not incompetent, apathetic or overworked.

Correct on the endorsement. I will always recommend what I have the best luck with. I also use a modified tvheadend as a back end for everything Live TV related so there’s that.

You should try that too.

AND I have all the same trash Android devices as everyone else. There’s that too.

But I’m not asking Plex for a damn refund because I’m saving thousands of dollars per year using this. Even if I were to buy an Emby sub it would all still be worth it in the end no matter how trash one or the other gets.

I get that you’re happy with Plex. I am not, and for good valid reasons. I just don’t understand your logic. If Plex doesn’t work as advertised for the hardware it says it supports, this is a problem. Now I could buy other hardware that I don’t need to see if Plex works better. Or I can try other software to see if it works better on my existing hardware. Even better if that software is free. For me this is a no brainer.

Given all the hardware you say you have, it seems that you have made this into sort of a hobby. Me, I just want to watch TV and want it to work. I think that would be true for a lot of Plex Live TV/DVR users. Anyway, it’s obvious that we are in two completely different places and look at it very differently. But it doesn’t change the fact that many Live TV/DVR users are left with something that they can’t use for months and months at a time.

Also, I’m not sure that you get that the problems I complain about are regressions. There was a brief time where Live TV/DVR actually worked fairly well for me. So the issue is not the hardware. The issue is that Plex Development abandons Live TV/DVR for months and months at a time, constantly creating new regressions that they refuse to fix as they development the next product that no one will ever use.

So you admit Plex is Broken?

Live TV works for me in the Plex app. Plex is absolutely capable of pulling its data from tvheadend without issue.

WOW An average TV watcher needs to use what to make this work?
Details Please…

Remember I’m An Ordinary Average Guy… … as most here are and we can’t just buy stuff because it works for you.

The first thing I would do is turn Transcode Interlanced off. Having this on is a big source of buffering while watching from a tuner card.

Wow? what are you replying to?

You all have problems with Live TV. Start by turning that off.
