If you rerun the package install (dpkg -i plexmediaserver-version.dpkg), it will reinstall the binaries without touching anything else.

It will also generate the reports (console and log file in /tmp)

I stopped PMS,then ran “dpkg -i plexmediaserver-version.dpkg” for my version of plex.
Restarted the OS and plex looks like it is running with the library files running from their original location at “/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support”.
Now before I mess anything up I want to check with you, to move the library do I reapply the instructions in linux tips? I thought it would have already recognized the other location because the override file is still there to direct systemd to it but that is not what I am seeing. The override file and the previously moved plex library folders are still in the location that I described in earlier posts.

  1. It’s an update to an existing installation
  2. There are no custom settings in overrides (override.conf or /etc/default/plexmediaserver)

To move the installation,

  1. Without deleting the existing /var/lib/plexmediaserver
  2. and with it stopped
  3. Follow the How-To to make a tar file (you must be full sudo bash (command shell) to do this.
  4. you can use `cd /var/lib/plexmediaserver ; tar cf - ./Library | (cd /new/location ; tar xf - )
  5. Remember to check the ownership of the top most directories so user plex can write. Also check permissions
  6. Then create the override before starting.

I am unable to move the library files, when I try, the move fails because it says the files are changing while trying to move them.
I ran systemctl stop plexmediaserver before trying, but somthing is still running.

Did you STOP plex? By what you describe, you didn’t.

I apperantly don’t know how to stop plex.
The original /var/lib/plexmediaserver is intact.
I tried ‘sudo systemctl stop plexmediaserver’ and ‘sudo service plexmediaserver stop’, neither stopped the library files from changing when attempting tar (see terminal sessions below).
I also ran ‘sudo snap services’ to see if something was left from the snap version I had previously removed.
