New Synology Compatibility: DS418, DS418play, DS918+

Just got a DS918+, have seen PMS is not in package list.
SPKs are here:
https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/download/DS918+#packages

Mac unarchiver can extract the package, INFO file contains:

package=“VideoStation”
version=“2.1.0-1226”
maintainer=“Synology Inc.”
arch=“x86_64”
firmware=“6.0-7321”
dsmuidir=“ui”
dsmappname=“SYNO.SDS.VideoStation.AppInstance”

Thanks for the info.

I was able to get the apollolake approved. It didn’t make this release (too far through the QA cycle)

It’s ok to add it manually.

untar the spk in a directory
add apollolake to the list of architectures
tar it back up tar cf packagefilename.spk *

@amfield

Don’t download anything from Synology . They don’t keep up to date. We’ve tried to work with them but they are ‘not very cooperative’

Make certain to download the 64 bit package NOT the 32 bit package

Note: HW transcoding is only available in the 64 bit package. (senseless to hw transcode using 32 bits on a 64 bit processor)

thanks Chuck, I only downloaded the VS SPK directly to have a look, didn’t install that version

I’ve used the 64bit plex & seems to be working so far! mostly using for music so don’t think I’ll need transcoding anyway

https://www.synology.com/en-uk/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Multimedia/Can_my_Synology_NAS_transcode_4K_videos_for_my_device

“4K transcoding is not supported on third-party software applications.”

Has anyone got a direct link to the package download?

For some reason when I go to https://www.plex.tv/downloads/ it just sits and loading after clicking the download link, same on multiple browsers.

Cheers.

plex.tv is down right now

Okay thanks, I’ll try again tomorrow.

I’ve done some testing today.

I am a bit confused and would like clarification.

  1. I did add support for the 32 bit package on apollolake processors.
  2. X86_64 is the Synology default architecture in DSM 6 for all 64 bit processors and is how PMS is supposed to be loaded
  3. I tested the 32 and 64 bit packages on my Avoton processor. It did match correctly to avoton and x86_64 respectively.

Did you attempt to install the 32 bit package or the 64 bit package ?
To get the best performance and use the upcoming hardware transcoding, the 64 bit package is required.

I’ve downloaded and installed the package (Version 1.9.3.4290) successfully on the NAS thanks. It seems to be working okay so far but I haven’t done much testing yet as I’m just in the process of mimicking the settings I had of the version on my Mac now.

I just realised I didn’t modify the package to add the architecture info, should I uninstall the package, modify it and then install it again? What happens if I don’t? Transcode problems?

Thanks.

What did you install? the package name will have it or you can get the log files and second line of Plex Media Server.log will show you the CPU info/

PlexMediaServer-1.9.3.4290-9798172d4-x86_64.spk

Sep 30, 2017 08:18:25.060 [0x7f7e63368700] INFO - Plex Media Server v1.9.3.4290-9798172d4 - ubuntu PC x86_64 - build: linux-ubuntu-x86_64 synology

Thanks.

Yep. that has the X86_64 architecture tag only. As it should .

Okay great, so I don’t need to uninstall then.

I’ll carry on with the config. Thanks for all your help.

Thanks for this thread guys.
It helped me get plex to work on my new 918+

Hello Everyone,

I have just upgraded to a Synology DS418.
I have tried to install plex but keep getting the error that the package is not supported.

I tried with the 3 packages for synology available on the plex download page.

Did I buy an unsupported nas?

The DS418 use the Realtek RTD1296 CPU (ARMv8). Engineering/CS don’t have a unit in hand to evaluate and explore (discover how to support it best).

Thanks for the quick reply.
How long do you expect this to take?

There is no way of knowing.

Hi again Chuck,

I’ve been doing a bit of testing with mixed results on the DS718+ (with 6GB RAM). SD and lower quality HD stuff plays fine but I tried a 1080p file and it would barely play, monitoring the performance on the NAS at the time and the CPU is maxing.

Is there anything I need to do to take advantage of the Intel Quick Sync feature or is there anything else you would recommended doing?

Or is it likely the NAS just isn’t up to running Plex?

Cheers.

The only thing you must do, when formally released, is to check the box in your Settings - Transcoder to enable it.
