New Synology Compatibility: DS418, DS418play, DS918+

Yep!

Download and test until you’re sick of looking at them OR melt the CPU

Not sure if these metrics help.

Wow that’s impressive. Question: because I don’t see “hw” in your screen print of the status screen of the various streams, does that mean your DS918+ is NOT using hardware accelerated encoding/decoding and is relying on the CPU instead? Unless I’m misunderstanding something, the Plex documentation seems to indicate that you’ll see “hw” when hardware acceleration is being used.

I have a feeling that’s how its displayed in PlexPy
The Plex status page indicates (HW).

FWIW, I had 8 clients last night, 2 direct stream and 6 transcodes (1080P source).
The CPU was bouncing around in DSM between 60-90%. no complaints from the streamers!

I’m happy with the purchase. the DS918+ is nice and compact and meets my expectations.

Ahh, gotcha - I didn’t realize that was PlexPy. Thanks for the info, I don’t have huge needs for my Plex situation but if it can do 3 simultaneous streams then I should be good.

Anyone can try out 4k h265 direct play on DS918+?

I hope Plex will also fix a version for the DS218+ o:)

The DS218+ specification:

DS218+ Intel Celeron J3355 Dual Core 2 Yes Apollolake DDR3L SO-DIMM 2GB

It is already supported.

Huh, seriously

I can’t find the DS218+ on the “Nas Compatibility List” and also can’t find Plex in the DSM Package Center.

DS718+ has the same transcoding capabilities as the DS918+ ?

https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/compare/DS718+/DS918+

Is the double ram matter?

I’m sorry I haven’t updated the doc.

X86_64 includes apollolake,
The 32 bit package specifically lists apollolake as is required by the Synology SDK.

Okay very nice!! I hope I can install Plex soon with Package Center

@CD130

Synology doesn’t keep up to date so don’t bother. They now have ‘their preferrred solution’ (Video Station). Running QA on PMS and keeping Package Center up to date is not a priority for them. We do keep trying.

Request? In the future, before you challenge something isn’t supported,

a) A quick search of the forum will find both those using Apollolake
b) Where I stated it since I handle Synology and QNAP support packaged
c) Where Engineering formally released my additions for Apollolake to everyone. https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/62832/plex-media-server#latest

Just bought the 918+.

I am coming from a WD Mycloud Mirror Gen 2 running 2 x WD Red 6TB drives.

Would i be able to simply place the two drives into the Synology (after i have backed up all the data) and set it all up?

The drives are, of course, reusable. The data on the drives is not.

Synology will partition and reformat the drives as it sees fit.

I just purchased the Synology DS918+ 4gb and I am struggling to get even two streams with plex. I’m using an HD Homerun prime to record shows via plex DVR. The streams are unfortunately streamed from Verizon in Mpeg2 and transcoded by Plex. I am a newb at this and it’s not going well. Any suggestions? :worried:

which version of plex? did you enable hardware transcoding?

Yes. It didn’t help much. Version 1.9.5.4339.

A lot has to do with the file and its contents .

Can you hover over one of the files giving you trouble, click “Get Info” and “View XML”. Then post that XML here.

Also, if you can recreate the playback which causes it. Play until the problem occurs, then Settings - Server - Help - Download Logs, attaching that ZIP file here, we can look at it and see what is actually happening and what PMS had decided to do

Thats fine just wanted to know if there was any issues. i have another drive that i can use to back up what is on both Red HDD so no issues for data loss.

Any recommendations for RAID config using 2 drives? I would most likely expand to another 2 in the future - both are 6TB currently
