Plex Remote Transcoder - A distributed transcoding backend for Plex

Wow, I have been waiting for this. I think I’ll try a Ubuntu server & PMS on Virtualbox image, and run it on my windows machines.

I have two unRAID boxes, both with Xeons that can handle a 1080p stream each. Currently I run two Plex Servers. This would be perfect solution to have one Plex Server and the other being used for transcoding when two people watch at same time.

Hopefully someone can make a Docker image from the Github

Hoping this comes to Windows, interesting project.

I hope this project still lives!

Don’t worry, I haven’t given up on it, I’ve just been busy.

Forgive me for being a noob, but would this work using multiple nodes as slaves instead of just one? I ask because I recently acquired a number of Raspberry pi 2s… They’re not terribly powerful, but each is more than capable of transcoding a single stream, and building a raspberry pi cluster plex media server would be an awesome project…

@spyrokeet Have a look at https://github.com/wnielson/Plex-Remote-Transcoder/wiki/Improvements-&-Additional-Features#load-balancing - it does support splitting the sessions.

I’d be really interested to see someone get the Pi’s hardware transcoding working with this - https://blankstechblog.wordpress.com/2015/01/25/hardware-video-encoding-progess-with-the-raspberry-pi/

This would actually be interesting for Windows! I could then take my Dell Server and load ESX on it and just run multiple Windows VM’s since it seems as my CPU are not even taking a hit on transcoding even with multiple streams.

Thread bookmarked. C’mon Windows version. I’d be willing to put up a bounty for it.

Would this be possible to do on a Synology NAS master and Mac Pro slave?

This is an awesome project, I am going to give it a try this weekend

Why’s everyone asking for a Windows version?

Any results? I’d like to give it a try as soon as I can get some borrowed hardware.

What a great project initiative! I hope it can be completed, I’d like to offload the transcoding from my inept synology ds415+ to anything else; raspberry pi2, or especially a windows pc. This has the potential of being my favorite nas addon!

Is it possible to use this with a remote storage box? For example, master node is linux, 2 linux slaves. Media is stored on a windows server?.

EDIT:
Will test this tomorrow

Because many users that complain (like me) about transcoding killing there machine are on windows.

@wnielson

best prject since the invention of slice bread  keep up the good work. I will also test it once(or if ever ) there is a windows version.

Is this project still going. Would be a great idea to have. I have 2 servers and Gaming PC and would love to use the power off all three when needed.

Yeah, I haven’t given up on it but I’ve been very busy lately. I hope to resume working on it soon.

great to hear. Going to setup a LAB over the next couple of days. Keen to try out.

■■■■■■■ AWESOME!!

Main Plex Server(VPS only 1€/Month) mounting hubic 12.5TB (4€/Month) transcoding remotely to 10 servers also from (VPS 1€ for everyone, yes its enough power to do 1 transcoding, and every of the VPS mounting also hubic, this reduce a lot bandwitch between transcoder and main)

Multiple transcoding server(scalable) + large media library for only 14€ month
