What I said is that it’s not your users, they belong to Plex
And AFAICT, Plex has a policy that says that when they roll-out a new feature, they natrually want to show it to THEIR USERS, but they have the option to turn it off
The only users that are your users are managed accounts in your Home!
This is stupid. No one here purchased Plex, just a license to unlock some features. Just because a bunch of people asked for a feature doesn’t mean the company is obligated to delivery the feature. I’m a lifetime member and I got the pass so long ago and I know I bring very little value to the company. If anything, I’m a slow drain on their finances, considering I sometimes cost proxy bandwidth on their infrastructure, and the small metadata and art downloads for new Linux ISO’s I download. I’m not a source of new users for them.
To continue to grow, Plex must acquire new users and ad support is a positive business model for income. Like Netflix, ads is the way to grow so they have zero reason to ever let “server owners” the ability to disable ads, steaming content, and social media. You own the hardware, not the software. This is proprietary, software as a service, not open source. This is why they can revoke the license if they desire to do so.
Anyways, you might not like the features they are developing but it’s bringing them money so they will keep doing it. But if all you want is something to stream your local content, Plex still does that. If you don’t want the other features, there are other solutions out there. If you want to stream it outside your house, there are other systems out there. If it’s missing something you want, build it and contribute to their repo. Opus 4.8 exists.
