Question: would it be possible for PlexWatch to make the difference between Direct Play, Direct Stream and transcoding?
T is used in both right now I think… (Direct Stream and full Transcoding)
If you really want to keep it short DP, DT and T would do it (although, I would prefer “Direct Play” “Direct Stream” and “Transcode” personally…
This presuming PW can get this info from PMS API…

My copy of plexWatch already distinguishes between Direct Play [D] and Transcode [T]. Is there a difference between Direct Play and Direct Stream?

Yes, direct play doesn’t transcode anything on PMS but direct stream copies video and transcodes audio. Still a big difference from my point of view. % of cpu usage between full transcode and direct stream/audio transcode are very different.

Ah, I see - I never knew of that distinction. So when you say that Direct Stream copies video, that means that the video portion of the stream remains untouched, while only the audio stream is processed?

This makes a lot of sense since, as you mention, CPU load would be very different for those two states, as shown by my anecdotal evidence. I have been wondering just what the hell “copy” versus “transcode” meant in my Roku player status info…

Kind of…
Example, with Roku; for the one connected just on my office TV, when I start a MKV with DTS 5.1 audio, since my TV doesn’t decode DTS, Roku copies video stream (no CPU) and transcodes only audio stream (10-15% cpu). Full transcode can take like 70-80% of my CPU.
Direct Play; none

I realized that it could see those difference when I tested PlexPY so I know PlexWatch could see it from PMS.

Basically, there are 3 types of streaming so I think there should be 3 from PW…

Direct Stream is still a “transcode”, but it allows the video or audio or both to be copied instead of converted. You can modify the format to include both formats below, of your choice.

{streamtype} T or D - for Transcoded or Direct {streamtype_extended} "Direct Play" or "Audio:copy Video:transcode"

oh! never saw the second one in doc, must have missed it…
Thank you so much, I’ll try it

Update: just tried it; wonderful!

Awesome addon for Plex. I will definitely be donating  I needed some help and was wondering if you could answer a few questions.

I have boxcar v2 setup to test out notifications. They work fine and everything is going smoothly!

  1. I want to send notification of “recently added” to all my shared users. What would be the best way to do that? I was thinking maybe sending an email (cheapest route since they wouldn’t be forced to purchase an app) but I don’t see how to send that many emails at once. Maybe someone can offer up some easy options?

  2. I want to customize the $alert_format in config.pl for “recently added” to simply show title/year/date-added and I can’t seem to find the format options and would it just be named ‘recentlyadded’ ?

Im also looking for a way to customize the recently added emails I get. Right now I get an email looking like this: “Agent X (2015): Sacrifice s01e06 [TV-14] [2015] 42min [720p 6ch] [4:16 07 dec 15]”

But what I would like is for an email to look something like this: “Agent X (2015): Sacrifice s01e06” And maybe an imdb link for movies.

Hey, @ljunkie - I’ve noticed in the past week that my plexWatch notifications have been incorrect in reporting whether something was directplayed or transcoded. Almost every day, I’ll get around four or five incorrect notifications. On my Roku 4, I check the stream info while a file is playing and it says direct play; the matching notification informs me that it’s being transcoded. Did something go wonky recently?

I believe @rcork mentioned a similar issue. I’m starting to think this is definitely related to the recent addition of theme music, which is actually starting to make some sense, although definitely a bug. Can you confirm this is only happening for TV episodes?

Can’t confirm at the moment. I can say it definitely happens with TV shows, but I’m almost 100% sure it happened on a couple of movies as well. I’ll try to test in the next couple of days to get you some more data.

Let me know. I can say with 100% certainty I know why it was failing for TV episodes and that will be fixed - definitely regression in the Plex Pass channel related to theme music.

Okay, I spent some time testing tonight. Here’s what I found:

  1. TV episodes are usually mis-reported as being transcoded (but not 100% of the time).
  2. Movies are sometimes mis-reported as being transcoded (I’d say about 25% of the time).

I tested by playing the same episode/movie at least twice. I verified each time that the file was being played directly, according to the OSD’s stream info (they all did). I tested with high-res and low-res MKV, MP4, h.264, and h.265 files.

Thanks for the info @tycho1974. I can confirm the issue does affect any video type, not just episodes. It is related to viewing an episode screen with theme music, then playing any video within a few minutes. It is cosmetic (not to downplay it) and it will be fixed in the next update.

Glad to help. This really only affects those of us who use plexWatch, and it doesn’t really affect my viewing experience - just the data-nerd center of my brain.

Can someone help me with this please. I would really appreciate it.

I’m trying to add the priority parameter to the pushover notifications. I want to have a priority of -1 so I don’t keep on getting notifications every hour about who’s watching what. Here is the api which states how to use priority on pushover notifications: pushover.net/api#priority

Thanks in advance.

I’m just about done setting everything up and I get “Failed to access Plex Media Server. Please check your settings.” I understand that has to do with the IP address and ports in the settings. I have already put my username and password in the config.pl file.

I’ve been using the private IP address listed in Plex under Server>Remote Access. I’ve tried using the port listed there as well, and I’ve also tried the ports used in Apache with XAMPP.

Any ideas?
