Reinstall OS Ubuntu 18 to 20.04 and had to set it all up again (Solved)

This is how it looks. Error were my videos is now.

It save the Libraries names. But looks like it don’t know any more then that.

thank you… Now i see it.

Whatever you had setup for the security in /media, or mounted elsewhere, to allow your USB drives to work is gone.

you need to recreate it or make fresh using this method.

Yes. I got them on a lot of UBS 3.0. It’s the same drives I had on it and I just copy the /etc/fstab file so they are all mounted the same place. They all have ext4 format.

Just started to scan the fist 10TB again. It will take a long time. But I will loss all the data I put in them. Good names, Not just like this “FILE180512-055544.MP4” so lost them.

Fixed the Dates too. Typed a lot of text on them too. It took me about 3 years. So lost it all.

But it can recan the data and I can start fresh again. But can’t remember it all.

Ouch. If I’m understanding you correctly, this is one of those cases where curating and assigning good name & structure as you go (tools like TheRename and FileBot) would save you hours (or days) of work .

When you get the names resolved, I think it will be in your better interest to burn the server down and start over.

I can still boot the old image I saved on a HDD. I had it on a 2TB SSD inside the server. It’s one m.2 SATA

Backed it up and I already booted it one time to save some things on the new install in the 2TB SSD inside it. But it’s a old Ubuntu.

-Raymond Day

I am not understanding what you have.
you somehow have multiple OS boot images .

I’m really sorry but this is way beyond what I can help sort out here.

Who helped you set this up?

No one. I did it myself. Put a live Ubuntu so it run on RAM and that’s how I copied the OS then I installed the new one and took me about a day to set it all up and the only thing I can’t get like it was is Plex.

-Raymond Day

Ok… Plex is really simple.

  1. apt installs and sets up the executable.
  2. /var/lib/plexmediaserver contains all the software knows about your media.
  3. User plex is what the service needs. (installer creates the UID/GID if not present)

The magic:

  1. /var/lib/plexmediaserver is chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver
  2. Start the service normally in systemctl
  3. Bring it up via the loopback adapter (http://127.0.0.1:32400/web)

If you can get the old /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library (and all below it)
into the new one (under 20.04),

and do the chown -R,

it should run just fine.

I did that chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver~

But I added the ~ on it. Because that one I copy from my backup. Then I renamed the other plaxmediaserver~~ like that and rename the other one took off the ~ on the end of it.

The I refreshed the web and it look just the same.

Right now putting the backup on another drive and going to copy the it again with:

rsync -avP /media/WD-3TB-green/var/lib/plexmediaserver/ /var/lib/plexmediaserver

WD-3TB-green I am using Etcher and it said about 16 min now. It started with 22 hours. The backup is named rayday_backup_image.img I had to unzip it. It fit on a 500GB hard drive when I 1st backed it up. That’s all I had when I backed it up and I did not use a lot of the 2GB OS.

I will see if this will work. It says 11 min. now.

OK I got the /var/lib/plexmediaserver folder copied from my backup.

But before that it was still scanning my 10TB drive when I got up this morning.

I renamed the /var/lib/plexmediaserver and refreshed the webpage and it was still working so don’t know where it was getting it from.

That’s what the /var/lib folder looks like now. See got 3 plexmediaserver folders eached name with ~ at the end of them did not went to delete them till got it working good. The one with just one ~ is what the .deb package installed. The one with ~~ is what I copied from the backup and the one with out is the new one I copied from the backup I just made again. But see its Owner is “squeezeboxserver” I do have that working and restored it good. So it was like that on my old OS and worked.

I know Plex can have updates and it just points to a .deb file. I can install it. So is there a update .deb file and maybe I can just install that and it will see all my data again?

-Raymond Day

Wow I got it working!

Had to delete the plexserver link in folder /etc/systemd/system

All so there was another folder with a plex link in it too. Don’t remember what one but I did delete all the links that were named plexserver dot something.

This time too did a chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver then I installed the plexmediaserver_1.20.2.3343-c91f25744_amd64.deb refresh the URL to it and now it’s scanning or “Refreshing guide data: Initializing” I guess because have not run it for about a week.

Happy got it fixed with my old data still there.

The hent was when installing with apt it would say still using the backup link. The links is what I deleted. I guess the chown command help too when it installed.

Thank you all for the help.

Wow I don’t know why but the boot M.2 SSD 2TB got filled up no space left.

Could not find out what filled it up. After about 3 days trying I gave up and reinstalled fresh again.

last thing did plex again. I got got to do the chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver So did that and refreshed the URL and it working again. Very good.

Hope it don’t fill up my boot drive.

Right now it’s saying:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sdb2 1.8T 19G 1.7T 2% /

Just got it all working the same again only the boot M.2 is not filled up.

In the morning will do the same df -h / command see what it will say…

Just wanted to let people know.

Is the drive partitioned (/home partition) ?

That’s a safe place to put the metadata (keeps the OS partition from overflowing) if it exists.

Also, turn off chapter and index images if you don’t use them. They use a lot of space
