Remote streaming will be a Plex Pass feature

I literally quoted it. I’m asking why they specifically state “before these changes go into effect” if it’s also true after the changes go into effect. I’m pointing out confusing language. You’re just being obtuse. Clarification was provided. I accepted it. I just pointed out the confusing language.

I got burned hard on the Downloads bait-and-switch so just wanted to be absolutely sure they said what they mean this time as they sure didn’t back when the Sync to Downloads switch happened.

Neither do I. Seems pretty clear to me.

Thank you. No biggie, internet is what it its.

I do appreciate Plex and it’s service and I completely understand that they have to make money too. I was kinda expecting this to happen.

I will survive and so will Plex.

That text has been updated on blog because we have seen the confusion about it.

Thank you!

I think the biggest concern is that with the new pricing structure going into effect at the end of April, that must mean that the new Plex Experience app will also be fully released at that time (since I’m assuming features are needed in the client for the new remote streaming pricing/licensing/etc.)

However, what has currently been released is nowhere near ready, and is missing a ton of additional clients yet. So they have basically 5 weeks to get that all done.

@OttoKerner @BigWheel

I’m quite confused about whether the remote playback fee applies to the server owner or to the viewer who is remotely watching content on that server.

It seems that for Plex Pass users, anyone accessing a Plex Pass user’s server can stream remotely for free, regardless of whether the viewer has paid or not. Additionally, a Plex Pass user can also remotely watch any content on a server they have access to, regardless of whether the server owner has paid.

However, the explanation of the Remote Watch Pass is a bit confusing to me. If neither my friend nor I have a Plex Pass, but I want to watch content on his server, does that mean that as long as either of us subscribes to the Remote Watch Pass, I can watch content from his server?

No. You need to subscribe to the remote watch pass. You’d only be able to watch content remotely from someone else’s server for free if they have a Plex pass.

From the blog post‘s FAQ section:

I do not have a Plex Pass, but stream remotely from a Plex Media Server:

To stream remotely starting on April 29, 2025, you will need a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass subscription on your account or the admin of the Plex Media Server from which you stream will need a Plex Pass subscription on their account.

So… if neither you or the remote server’s admin have a Plex Pass, the Remote Watch Pass will give you (as the user) access to the feature.

Another mediocre decision.
Thanks Plex, you are turning into a ■■■■■■ company. If you are not already.

So, if I don’t have a Plex Pass, each person who wants to remotely watch content from my server must subscribe to Remote Watch Pass individually or have their own Plex Pass.

Yes, that is correct.

Too each their own. Personally I find this update refreshing. It shuts everyone up about the potential “shutting down personal media takes” on the forums for a good while. The company needs money to maintain a product, its been YEARS since they charged more, it should happen like ALL other businesses…

Can someone from Plex confirm that with the new pricing and Remote Streaming becoming a Plex Pass feature - will that require the use of the new Plex Experience app by the end of April?

@OttoKerner ??

Looks like I found the answer here…seems that as long as you’re using the old apps then they won’t be affected - however, that definitely means Plex is looking to get them released ASAP, even if they aren’t ready for prime time.

Funny - that’s probably been the driving force for the new apps all along…

Which Plex apps/platforms will be affected by this remote streaming change?

The changes and limitation to remote streaming of personal content will affect users of apps that offer our new Plex experience (once they’re released). In the short term, platforms running an app that has not yet received an update to our new experience will not be affected. It’s possible that future system changes may affect even users who have not updated to an app offering our new Plex experience.

To summarize:

  • I have a Plex Media server as well as a Plex Pass subscription
    • You are all good, and both you and users you authorized can stream from your server(s), both locally and remotely
    • In fact, it’s better now, since if they use a mobile device, they no longer need a one-time activation
  • I have a Plex Media server, but I do not have a Plex Pass subscription
    • You can use your server locally, and so can any users you authorized (Including mobile devices)
    • If somebody, you included, needs to access the server remotely, they need some kind of Plex Pass subscription (Lifetime, yearly, monthly or remote)
  • I do not have a Plex Media server, but I have a Plex Pass
    • You can stream from all servers you have been invited to, as well as our online catalogs
  • I do not have a Plex Media server, and I do not have a Plex Pass
    • You need some kind of Plex Pass subscription (Lifetime, yearly, monthly or remote) to stream from a Plex Media server unless the server owner has a Plex Pass, but can stream without from our online catalog

If you are using the old app nothing will change until the eventual day comes where it just does not work with server anymore due it being too old to work with newer versions of server afaik. I do not know when that will be

Just to verify as I am quickly scanning all these replies…

I am currently not a PlexPass subscriber and sharing my server library with family who access it remotely at no charge.

Under these new changes, I will now have to pay a subscription or lifetime fee for a PlexPass and once I do that, I can share my server library with family and they don’t have to pay anything extra for that access. Correct?

Correct, unless the people you share with already has a Plex Pass

Thank you for the reply.

$120 for a lifetime PlexPass before the April increase is not a bad deal.

However, if it’s worth switching over to JELLYFIN or EMBY, let me know. If either do the same that PLEX does at no charge with a modern interface, it may be worth considering.
